AI + Environment Summit Zurich

After engaging presentations from Michael Anthony, S. Karthik Mukkavilli and @milliechapman.bsky.social, we are now discussing the pipeline from AI to Impact, moderated by Sarah Tariq. Take home message: the fairness and trustworthiness of models are key for supporting society as a whole.

Our second keynote speaker, Devis Tuia, expanded on the topic of species modeling, touching upon scales and modalities. To know more about handling of partially available data and model flexibility, check out his talk!

Dr. Jochem Braakhekke is an academic associate in the Earth Observation Application and Services group at the Remote Sensing Laboratories, University of Zürich, and a scientific consultant with the National Point of Contact for Satellite Data (NPOC).

Earth Observation (EO) data is a cornerstone for addressing spatially large challenges, but its potential is only fully realized when availability and accessibility are broadly known and used. Dr. Braakhekke will introduce the mission of the Swiss National Point of Contact for Satellite Data.

As a co-author of ClimateBert and other NLP-based tools for analyzing climate information from corporate reports, Julia’s work has gained international attention—featured in outlets such as the *Financial Times* and *Bloomberg*. Julia holds a PhD in Economics from ETH Zurich

Her research leverages advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques to:
- Translate forward-looking qualitative information into financial risk metrics
- Assess corporate climate disclosures
- Design effective human-in-the-loop strategies for data extraction and interpretation

Dr. Bingler is a Research Associate in Financial Risk Data Analytics at the University of Oxford, a Fellow for Monetary Policy at the Council on Economic Policies (CEP), and is affiliated with the Sustainable and Resilient Economy AI Lab (SUREAL) at the University of Zurich.

Her research focuses on artificial intelligence and data science in Earth observation. She develops innovative signal processing and machine learning methods, and big data analytics solutions to extract highly accurate large-scale geo-information from big Earth observation data.

Prof. Xiaoxiang Zhu is Chair Professor for Data Science in Earth Observation at TUM (Technical University of Munich, Germany). She directs the national ML4Earth center, the AI4EO international lab, and is a Director at the Munich Data Science Institute.

The fourth keynote speakers of the summit is Professor Xiaoxiang Zhu from Technical University of Munich. We are looking forward to her keynote on "AI for Earth Observation for Social Good".

His recent research focuses on the intersection of AI, natural language processing, and climate finance —developing tools such as climateBERT,, chatClimate,, and Climinator. He also co-founded the sureal.ai lab at the University of Zurich, focusing on sustainable and resilient AI-driven economics.

He holds a PhD in Economics and Finance from the University of St. Gallen. His work in asset pricing and risk management has been recognized with awards from GRASFI, EFMA, INQUIRE Europe, the German Finance Association, and RISK Magazine.

Markus Leippold is Chair in Financial Engineering at the University of Zurich and Senior Chair at the Swiss Finance Institute, while also serving as a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind and an Associated Research Fellow at the University of Oxford.
