The great historian of Southeast Asia, Anthony (Tony) Reid, died yesterday in Canberra, aged 85. His studies transformed our understanding of Indonesia and the region. A professor at the ANU for many years, he also founded institutes at UCLA & NUS. And he was a lovely person

From Arthur Kleinman: 'Medicine on a Larger Scale is ... a step forward in imagining a counter-biomedicine that can better connect social suffering and healing with interpretive social science, post-colonial imaginings, and some of the more serious problems of the world. Impressive!’

As Craig Santos Perez writes: 'Land of Famished Beings is a must-read for students and scholars of environmental anthropology and multispecies ethnography. Moreover, it is essential reading for anyone passionate about justice in the Pacific, a region hungry for justice'

Never Heard of Yogyakarta? It Might Be the Center of the Universe. (Gift Article) The Indonesian city is home to some of the greatest Hindu and Buddhist temples, a thriving food scene and an area known as the Cosmological Axis, a cradle of Javanese culture.

Too late to offer a paper but soon registration for HoMSEA in Yogyakarta will open. An interesting article in the NYT on Yogya in the past day or so. While it's not as magical as in 1978, when I first visited, still worth experiencing. Not to forget Solo, only a few hours away, and much quieter....

We now have a cover for Medicine on a Larger Scale: Global Histories of Social Medicine (CUP 2025), eds. @ahlie.bsky.social, Jeremy Greene, and me. Many brilliant contributors give alternative genealogies and futures for social medicine - never so necessary, so urgent as now
