This is such a wonderful perspective from the amazing @fendtlab.bsky.social - in so many ways it was an incredible experience for both myself and @thedawsonlab.bsky.social to have Sarah share her time & brilliant intellect with us - I will always be grateful for the opportunity to host her πŸ™πŸΏ

Four or five people of unknown experience or expertise review it blindly provide a score (out of 7) - that is averaged and provided to the candidate - no discussion takes place - no normalisation of scores takes place - it’s a lottery! Good luck if that is the future in the USA

Where have I heard this before? πŸ€” β€œLet’s cancel grant review panels as they don’t facilitate accountable peer review or education of the next generation” - Ah Yes! that’s the SHAMBOLIC MESS we have where submitting a grant is like buying a lottery ticket! mRNA export factors store nascent transcripts within nuclear speckles as an adaptive response to transient global inhibition of transcription Transcription inhibitors also disrupt nuclear export. Here, Williams etΒ al. reveal that mRNA export factors sense transcription inhibition and adapt by storing mature export-competent mRNA in nuclear speckles. This enables rapid release when transcription resumes and ensures retention of cellular identity and viability during a transient global transcription insult.

Why can a human tolerate a drug that globally inhibits transcription? Why do transcription inhibitors not cure cancer? Our first paper of 2025 may help explain (some) of this!

So incredibly proud of @tobiaswilliams.bsky.social & Ewa Michalak who led the work!
