The smoke detector in your house goes off too often. Burnt toast. A sensitive battery. After a while, you stop reacting. It’s nothing. Then one night the alarm goes off again, and you roll over in bed because you think it is the same false signal.

"When the legislative branch yields power to a presidency that is eager to consolidate it, the imbalance does not correct itself. It accumulates. That is what he wants."

“In Minneapolis, skepticism is not sabotage. It is civic participation. It is what happens when a community has seen, more than once, that what was written on paper did not match what was captured on camera.”

Being acknowledged alongside @vanjones.bsky.social and @donlemonofficial.bsky.social was not on my Jan. bingo card! To my amazing substack subscribers, I’m grateful for your support. The journey’s just beginning! I promised to stay committed, and this is just a small part!
Don’t let this headline fool you. In Minneapolis, we are still under constant attack from our Federal Government.
TurnSignl just launched instant access to an immigration attorney, anywhere in America. You can also sponsor memberships for others, because a society should never force people to choose between basic needs and basic rights.

Let’s talk about the First Amendment.
“There is an old lesson in American civic life that keeps resurfacing in moments like this. Organizing beats money. Not because money lacks power, but because it cannot manufacture legitimacy. It cannot create trust.”

I chose this structure intentionally. I want these ideas to be accessible to anyone, regardless of income, while also giving people who believe in this work a way to invest in it.
There is also an optional paid tier for people who are able and want to support the work. The content is the same for everyone. The difference is simply whether you are helping sustain independent civic writing.
This is an excerpt from the first publication of my new newsletter, The Bridge with Jazz Hampton, focused on making sense of law, government, and innovation, from local communities to the national stage.
It is free and open to everyone. There is no paywall.
“When I ran for Mayor of Minneapolis, I did not do it because I wanted to be a politician. I ran because I saw real civic needs in our community, and I believed I could help meet them.”

The irony is palpable.
We need everyone to wake up.
Alex, and ICU nurse, was k*lled by Federal agents today. Here is my breakdown/opinion on the video. Let me know if you’d like me to splice the videos together for those who would be willing to watch.
Organized people. Beat Money. Every time.
The Levy has broken. I’m going to consistently share. I have to.
ICE shows up for a $50,000 signing bonus.
In Minneapolis, we show up for our neighbors. For free. Every time.
FACTS about the “immigration crackdown.” Only ~7% had convictions for violent crimes. In DC over 80% had NO criminal record. ICE custody data showed roughly 72% had no conviction at all. It’s just our neighbors.
Thank you, @governorwalz.mn.gov for all you have done. We are better because of you and your work.
Thank you to the 81,508 people who voted for me. I have never regretted this decision, not even for a second. What is next? I will share very soon.
"Trump’s demand that a president prove his legitimacy has evolved into a system that now demands the same of everyone in America."
A great point from @jazzformayor.bsky.social

Today i went to the ICE out of Minnesota protest & @jazzformayor.bsky.social was there passing out yard signs & prevented me from biffing it on the actual Ice….
Also, i somehow became a sign handler too and passed put 100s, specifically to the actual community standing outside their businesses 🥹
I wrote this op ed after watching immigration enforcement move into everyday life in Minnesota. It explores how the politics that once questioned the legitimacy of Barack Obama have evolved into a system that now places the burden of proof on entire communities.

Not now. Not ever.
In a season meant for reflection and unity, our leaders should embody respect, honesty, and care for one another. I would never allow my own children to speak in such a way, and no one entrusted with public responsibility should either. 2/2
I am deeply appalled by this social post. Disagreement on policy is part of public life, but belittling our neighbors and attacking public servants, especially in this manor, tears at the very fabric of our community. This behavior is corrosive, and unacceptable. 1/2
***This post is a thank you, and a congrats to my team. Not a slight or jab at any other campaign. As I mentioned before, congrats to the mayor on your win!***

Thank you to everyone who helped, supported, shared, hosted, knocked, called, encouraged, or simply believed in what we were building together.
That work continues. 3/4
We set out to be bridge builders.
To focus on connection, dignity, and listening.
The results show how many people across the city were willing to meet in that spirit. 2/4
