Ah, I remember the 70s. Inflation-adjusted oil price (WTI) back to 1946 for context
Inflation-adjusted oil price (Brent)
My experience with COD very similar to Rose’s, including the timing. Didn’t finish my last reread. It’s only when I go somewhere else that I realize there’s still some COD in NO. Take me home!
Harry Lime!
From the other place, a bunch of maps and photos showing the original extent of the cemetery extending beneath the dome. After 1841 official burials and monuments were restricted to a smaller area not under the footprint of the future dome x.com/TK_Wharton/s...
Awesome
Yikes, rival brothers with rival groceries at Harmony and Carondelet. The melodrama, the nasty details. Same as it ever was 😲
Couldn't figure out how to log-on from link, but easy to find by searching for headline (August 30, 1907 Times-Pic)
That’s a good one. Link wants me to log on, but I’m out at the Broadside doing mudbugs right now 🦞
He's too ignorant to know what "no quarter" means
😂
Share any spicy bits you dig up😃
If there’s a particular building you want to learn about, I’d be happy to do the research and forward you the most interesting clippings. DM me the address. TK
Old corner stores have great stories. Pick your fave dive bar in an old building and do the Newsbank search - you’ll be amazed at all the sh#t that when down in there and learn how the place evolved over the decades
From what I can tell, just about every corner grocery served at least beer before (and during) prohibition. Also, typically ran illegal gambling (into the 1950s). You can find published arrest notices from when owners were late in paying their protection money
During the worst of the covid shutdown, I provided this free service through the other place because it was easy online research and fun
Get address from Sanborn (1885 ed. and Robinson will have old addresses). You can also find older mentions searching for like “Constance and Washington” or “Washington corner Constance” or “Washington at Constance” etc
Public library that is
Are you still in La.? I think any library in the state has same access. If not, call NOPL, might be a visitor card
Last: same libcon portal gives you access to all the Sanborn (hi-res in color) as well as Robinson atlas
Also can used advanced search with AND and OR to search for common forms of doubles etc. E.g. 1234-1236 vs 1234-36 and each individual address separately
Link: click on “Newsbank,” enter NOPL library card number, search on addresses with quotes like “1234 Constance”
Births
You probably know about chain of title research at the notarial archives then. Also, NOPL online Newsbank search on your old and new address will show you all the booths, deaths, parties, crimes, criminals, and real estate listings through time. It’s the rare old house that isn’t spicy
Nice!
A print of the old photo of Campagnos is hanging on the wall at Harkins if you want a better view than my quick phone snap
Yeah, whole city renumbered in 1890s - here's an early (1885) Sanborn showing store at 517 Magazine in the little triangular space between Felicity and Richard - Harkins/Campagnos
