Future research efforts may focus on enhancing the cultivation of morel or truffle species within Morchellaceae that have not yet been domesticated, such as yellow morels and Leucangium truffles.

This dataset offers high-quality genome assemblies for many previously unstudied Morchellaceae species, clarifies higher-level phylogenetic relationships, and provides a valuable resource for exploring genome function using comparative genomics approaches

Morchellaceae species were found to be predominantly heterothallic, with either the MAT1-1 or MAT1-2 loci; however, the occurrence of colocalized mating-type idiomorphs, indicative of homothallism, was observed in M. rufobrunnea, M. peruviana, Leucangium carthusianum.

This study uncovered numerous previously unrecognised genomic features, including evidence of saprotrophic potential within Morchellaceae and the absence of typical biotrophic markers, shedding light on the complex evolutionary pathways of nutritional strategies in fungi.
