The implicit theory behind the open social web was that platform quality would determine outcomes. Build something that’s better, and in combination with the incumbent getting worse, this would lead to such difference in quality, user experience and safety that at some point people would switch from X to alternatives like Mastodon or Bluesky. This theory held up for a while in 2023 and 2024. In 2025 it started to falter, as Musk aligned himself with Trump, the signup waves to the alternative platforms effectively stopped. In early 2026, this theory is now really over, because X has fundamentally changed. Mastodon and Bluesky are not in competition anymore with the platform X, because X has changed. It changed from being a platform to the power structure for the neo-royalty, with the public square shambling along as a zombie, animated by everyone who still treats X like it’s 2015. You cannot out-compete ‘where the ruling faction radicalizes and coordinates’ by having better moderation policies or algorithmic choice. X is not a platform problem anymore, it is a power problem, and building a different platform does not solve the power problem.

If the medium is the message, then the message of algorithmic content platforms is not expression or connection or freedom. It is salience above all else.

This is what is happening to us on these platforms. They cannot behave any other way.

It does not just change how you understand reality, it changes how you engage with that reality. When we know that our speech will be silenced if it does not capture and hold attention, we alter our behavior to say only the most attention-grabbing things.

This effect can even do this to our minds, re-forming our thought processes to weight whether a thought would grab attention over whether it is true.

The fact that this is done solely for profit does not change that it is a perversion of your speech.

In many cases, it is amplified specifically because it does not place any value on truth or consequence.

In an era defined by these platforms, that has resulted in an information economy (and a politics) driven almost entirely by how good something is at capturing and retaining attention.

In most cases the primary service your speech provides is the capture and retention of attention. Whatever speech is better at capturing and retaining attention is the speech that will be amplified regardless of truth, care, or consequence.

Placing a layer of algorithmic recommendation on speech does not make speech less free, but it does pervert it.

Algorithmic mediation turns speech into a resource extracted from human behavior.

Platforms do not value speech because it is protected, they value the service it provides them.
