Neither of them are really "AI" in the way the term is understood and used. That even OP, who is critical of it, still uses the term at all is indicative of how successful tech marketing using it has been.

"Machine learning" and "AI" are also different things, due to the connotations each term carries.

Techbros deliberately conflate them because calling a machine learning algorithm by AI makes it sound like it's on the verge of a technological singularity. It is incapable of this.

It is absolutely *maddening* that techbro slop generators co-opt the "AI" umbrella term so effectively, it makes it so much more entrenched
