This is basically the problem with, well, everything at the moment. Increasingly, our economy is built around extraction, rent-seeking and fraud, and because these are the only ways to get ahead, everyone is giving up on providing actual goods and services to people who actually want and need them.

I once tried something like this in a game I ran, but it unknowingly sent enemies to a pocket dimension. When the foes finally escaped, angry and united, chaos ensued, but it was glorious.

One of the things that personally drives me crazy in the U.S. is how youth sports/athletic activities went from a part of the public good (municipal leagues and fields! rec centers! public parks!) to a privatized, expensive, highly competitive, highly structured pursuit for wealthy kids’ résumés

On #2, one of the things that I just had a conversation about today was that, sometimes, I just need to _shut up_. Sure, they want to hear what I have to say, as the experienced old guy, but sometimes they have great ideas on how things can be different/better, and I want to hear those ideas. 👍

How do you fight that becoming irrelevant as an ageing white male?

1) Stop saying the next generations suck.
2) Learn from them, accept them.
3) Acknowledge your privilege and your blind spots
4) Earn the trust of others.
5) Become a wizard by turning your experience into magic for others.

I wish more of us understood how our cognitive biases impacted us, our relationships, our workplaces. 😔 Recognizing and accepting we have them is a start -- and possibly the hardest part... 🤔

I literally saw a post two weeks back in which a guy with two jobs was flagellating himself because he was short on rent, lamenting that had he donated plasma more, maybe his rent would be on time. Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

Really smart take here. A good amount of harm that generative AI is producing in modern society is coming from the fact that a ton of people (sometimes including police) have bought into fantasies about what the technology can actually do.
