Adventure games on the ZX Spectrum were a big influence on me, too. Tir Na Nog and Dun Darach and - especially - The Hobbit. I only read the book because you got a free copy with the game.

The 1980s stuff in particular is really distinctive, I think - all swords, sorcery, dry ice and floaty synths.

Been thinking about my love of fantasy, and 1984 feels like a pivotal year: Fighting Fantasy, Robin of Sherwood, and (genuinely) an advert for Shell Grip where Tim Healy is chased through the woods by Herne the Hunter. I spent every ad break hoping to see it.
