Speaking as an arcade old-head, there is a small amount of joy that comes when someone about to leave is too lazy to take it back themselves, gives you their Aldi shopping cart as you are coming in.

Quarters are quarters, no matter the era.

CvS2 Maki has the LP-MP-HP-HK chain that all Bushinryu have in other games. But both the HP & HK hit very high making them whiff against many crouching characters. You can use this to your advantage by buffering in a 720 and microwalking forward to grab. It works at all break points of the chain!

Something has gone horribly, horribly wrong at Evo 2025 CvS2 Top 8.

Incredible and INSANE at #Evo2025: In what may be the biggest tournament ever for CvS2, the Top 8 includes all 6 grooves!

C Choiboy
A Bas, ericturbo
P Steve H
S Dr. B
N Buktooth
K Silentscope, Senor Payaso

There are defined groove tiers, but it shows CvS2 still gives specialists a chance to shine!

At Evo with a head cold but feeling much better today than yesterday.

My status yesterday: Half asleep, my brain decided to try and make sense of the Marvel Tokon beginner's guide info by putting into the quadratic equation, which startled me awake something awful

A quick thread in the replies with more math regarding the health recovery factor for Ratio 4 characters. The bottom line: Even in impossible best-case scenarios, R4 characters still have less effective health against a team of 3, and it gets worse the longer rounds go on.

4/ To answer your Q: No, R4s can't risk taking more damage. They are starting with lower potential, MUCH lower actual health to begin with! Only gets worse the longer a round goes.

Ultimately, a team of 3 has built-in time/health advantages to work with. R4s have to work harder use their power adv.

17.06.2025 17:11 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

3/ In the thread's 2nd pic you can see R1 Yama has 9100 effective HP vs. R4 atk pwr. For the weaker R1 to do the job vs R4's more eff. HP, it needs to remove 5700 HP *after* accounting for health recovery.

5700 target + 3000 potential recovery = 8700 total
R4 8700 potential < R1 9100 actual

Oof...

17.06.2025 17:11 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

2/ Obviously, any damage the R1s do vs the R4 must also factor in health recovery for the R4. But even in the best case scenario the R4 is behind from get go & falls further behind with every tick of the clock.

I will prob make a video later about this that will include detail. But here's the math:

17.06.2025 17:11 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

1/4 Simple version of health recovery: You get back as health 3x what was left on the timer at the end of the previous round. Essentially, you start a round with 3000 health available for a win and that goes down linearly with time. This is a flat number that does not scale with ratios. ...

13/ And it fell just short! Congrats to Justin on his ~content~ and to Bas for thankfully winning CEO and not setting back CvS2 tournament meta 20 years (*nervous laughter*).

I hope you enjoyed this terribly deep dive into CvS2! We'll see you at Evo 2025 for more CvS2 tournament action!

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 6    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

12/ Justin understands the math of the CvS2 free ratio system! He's also uniquely qualified to make an R4 character work, given his prowess with footsies and fundamentals.

K-Groove Ratio 4 Haohmaru is the meme, but C-Groove Ratio 4 Sagat was the best shot at doing what he did.

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 5    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

11/ Understanding all of this, you can see why Justin was still patient and selective in many of his last matches at CEO, even in the games where he wiped out Bas's R1 Yama. The Ratio 4 advantage in CvS2 is not that good of one, actually, especially against elite level competition.

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

10/ Also, in Time Over games the winner is the character with the highest % of health regardless of ratio. R4s recover less health with long rounds and may need to be more aggressive to keep their advantage and/or avoid time out losses, which can lead to mistakes & losing more health than budgeted.

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

9/ While the Ratio 4 character can kill an R1 pretty easily, they have to be careful not to take too much damage along the way. If they do, the R2 anchor character in the last round will often be aheadโ€”at least according to the math)โ€”neutering the R4's advantage over the R1s and the team as a whole.

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

8/ The Ratio 4 character, despite having more HP & damage output than the Ratio 1, *is actually at a disadvantage* in the grand scheme of things. Their opponent, as team of three, has multiple chances and MUCH more total health and time to work with (scam) to deny the R4 their power advantage.

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

7/ Consider the first image above, showing the daunting difference between a Ratio 4 & Ratio 1. But that only shows what the R1 has to do to OCV the R4. (Which Bas did in a game!) When you rescale it to show what an R1 has to do break even for the team as a whole, things look different!

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 7    ๐Ÿ” 3    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

6/ Notice that this isn't 25%! This is the first clue as to why Ratio 4 characters are generally not optimal for high-level CvS2 tournament play.

It turns out that R4 characters are at a disadvantage due to their their high damage output not being enough to overcome their low total health.

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

5/ R2 Blanka has 14800 raw HP, the equivalent of 11385 HP vs. an Ratio 4 Sagat if both had the same (R2) attack power.

A Ratio 4 Sagat has 20720 HP. If equal at 11385 HP, he would have 55% health.

This means the two R1s would collectively need to take off 45% health from R4 Sagat, or 22.5% each.

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

4/ Here is how I will define this: If the final round starts with the R2's effective health (actual health รท R4 attack power pct.) equal to/more than the R4's actual health after going through two R1 characters, the two Ratio 1s in the team of three were effective against the one Ratio 4.

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

3/ You can see how cautious an R1 needs to be against an R4. One wrong step can & will delete them with very little damage done against the R4.

But how much damage do two R1s need to do to be effective in this scenario, particularly w/an R2 (for Bas, Blanka) anchoring the team?

17.06.2025 01:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

2/ Here is how character effectiveness in CvS2 changes per ratio:

Ratio 1: -20% health/-18% damage
Ratio 2: Base health/damage
Ratio 3: +17% health/damage
Ratio 4: +40% health/+30% damage

In R4 vs. R1 rounds, normalizing health & attack power equates to the health bars in the pic above. Daunting!

At CEO 2025, Justin Wong entered CvS2 with a Ratio 4 C-Sagat. He went all the way to Grand Finals Reset but couldn't quite beat Bas in the end.

Ratio 4 play is kind of a meme in CvS2. But what's the actual math? This pic represents what Bas was basically facing at the start of each game.๐Ÿงต 1/14
