lol I’m trying to explain Alice Is Missing to a friend who loves TTRPGs and she’s like “wait why are there pre-gen characters. Why is it so specific. Why can’t we just make our own characters for this game” BESTIE ITS A ONE SHOT RPG BEING SOLD AT TARGET

With the adrenaline filling my veins, busting my way off the dissection table is almost comically easy. With my telekinesis, I immediately unlatch the Velcro straps holding me down and shove everything and everyone as far away from me as possible. I scream too, even though I don’t have to for my powers. Or maybe I do. When I did karate briefly, my punches and kicks were always stronger when I exclaimed at the hit. Maybe the concept is similar with superpowers. It doesn’t matter. The guards and scientist all yell in surprise and then hit the walls with heavy, bone-snapping thuds. The scientist and second guard slump to the ground, unconscious, as I bolt upright and leap off the table towards the door. The first guard groans and slides down the wall, but he grips his side in pain and barely gets himself back to standing before I’m already gone from the room.  Did I kill them? The second guard and the scientist? I don’t know, and shame fills me as I realize I don’t care. You’re a murderer, I think. A monster. Good thing that’s what my brother and the kids down here need.

Naturally, everything goes to complete and utter shit less than an hour later.  It happens while Jack and Tommy are still out shopping, when Alice is showing Sara how to use her tablet and I’ve got a notebook out to show Lavender how to spell a few big kid words. Nico, who fully just stole Jack’s book earlier, is reading it on the bed next to Sara and Alice. I’m in the middle of writing the word “beautiful” when I hear it.  Our hotel room window faces an alleyway—it’s why we’ve been able to climb up the fire escape without anyone really noticing or caring—but it’s still close enough to the street for us to hear cars. Which is, importantly, what I hear. Three cars, all pulling up to the curb, car doors opening and closing as people climb out.  It’s too coordinated to be three random hotel guests. When I look up at Alice, she’s staring right at me, probably thinking the exact same thing.  “What?” Lav asks as I put the pencil down and get up off the bed. “What is it?” “Shh,” I tell her, walking over to the window. I peer through it, down into the alleyway, and spy two men wearing ill-fitting suits and wired earpieces walking into view from the street. Definitely Asclepius security goons. Shit. “Guys, time to go. Asclepius is here.”  “What?” Sara asks, and though she keeps her voice down, the panic in it is obvious. “How’d they find us?”

I realize what she’s about to do—manipulate my emotions to convince me to stay. She has to touch me to do it.  Panic and fury and insult well up inside me.  She’s going to manipulate me? Screw her.  I snarl and whip around, letting go of Tommy’s hand to grab her wrist, and without even thinking, I dull the swirling stardust of her power until it can no longer be used. It happens without any conscious thought on my end, just a pure, unadulterated reaction to someone trying to manipulate my emotions. I had enough of that growing up without superpowers helping it along. I won’t have it happen to me again.  She gasps and yanks her hand away, out of my grip, and for a moment the two of us stand there in the hospital hallway, staring at each other. I curl my hands into fists and they shake at my sides, ready to punch, kick, fight my way out if I have to. The woman’s eyes are wide behind her glasses, and she looks… devastated.  In a flash, I realize what I’ve done. Instinctually, I know what I did was a dampening effect, not a total cut-off from her powers—could I even do that? How did I even do what I just did?—but she doesn’t know that. To her, I just took away the one thing that made her special. Her power.  I’ll let her know it isn’t permanent, but first, she should know a thing or two about me.

“Not this time,” Alice says firmly. “I finally convinced Jack to use his mind control on the chaperones today because we knew we wanted to meet you.”  I blink at Alice, and then I turn to Jack in surprise. “You don’t like using your powers?” I ask. He shakes his head again. “It’s invasive,” he says. “And messed up.” “Useful,” Alice says. “Shut up, dude, you’re basically a fire bender. I’m like if Professor X actually cared about people’s mental privacy.”  I stare at him for a long moment, and then a hysterical laugh bubbles out of me before I can stop it. I immediately try to stifle it to no avail. Jack and Alice look at me, confused, and I suck in a breath and tell myself to get it under control.  “Sorry, just…” I shake my head and let out another small laugh. “God, sorry, I thought I was the only one who thought Professor X was the absolute worst. Like, freezing all those people in place? That’s terrifying! And I first watched those movies when I was eight!”  “Yes!” Jack says, and then gestures at me emphatically while looking at Alice. “See?” Alice rolls her eyes. “All’s fair in love and war, Jackie boy,” she says.  “And I’m allowed to be deeply uncomfortable every time I use my powers, Allie girl.” “Do not fucking call me that.”

“You had years to plan that rescue, Alice,” I tell her. “Four years and special access through your parents and a stable source of food and warmth on top of it. We don’t have any of that anymore. We have to focus on surviving right now.”  “That’s all we’ve been doing since we ran away, though!” Tommy said. “I’m tired of just surviving, Pen! I want to take them down!” “Well, tough shit!”  “Pen,” Jack says quietly, and the three of us immediately fall silent at the solemn tone of his voice. When I meet his gaze, his eyes are sad but determined, with a serious steadiness that’s as hard as steel.  “They’re right,” he says. “We can’t run. Asclepius and STRIKE will chase us forever, and I’m not letting my baby sister grow up hunted and scared. You and Tommy weren’t being chased by anyone but the cops before this. It was different. But now we’ve got my uncle and his entire company on our heels, and if we don’t turn around and fight back, we may never have another shot at taking them down.”  My stomach twists in anger and panic as I realize I’m on the losing side of this argument. I feel my hands begin to shake, and I curl them into fists to hide it.  “You don’t know what that’s going to take,” I say, and there’s a tremor in my voice I can’t hide. Angry tears begin to prickle in my eyes. “You have no idea what we’ll have to do, Jack. You have no clue.” “And you do?”

“Pen!”  Tommy’s voice fills me with so much relief I stumble and nearly fall on my face onto the concrete. He doesn’t help by running up and slamming into me with a hug that actually does knock me on my ass. Still, I hug him back. Tightly.  “No one followed you?” I ask. He shakes his head. You can’t ever be sure, but Tommy and I have gotten pretty good at noticing when we’re being followed. Most people aren’t very subtle about it. “Tommy, the video—” “It got uploaded,” he says, eyes wide and frightened, and my stomach drops down so far it might as well be in the East River. “Not the last bit where I used my powers, but—Oh god, Pen, what if, what if STRIKE finds us, what if—” “They won’t,” I say firmly, and though my heart is racing and every inch of me feels like it’s frozen and on fire at the same time, I keep my head on. I always keep my head on. “We’ll leave tonight, okay? We’ll go somewhere else. Chicago, maybe, or San Francisco. I don’t know.” “But, but mom said—”
