In the wake of all the interest around this and a desire to better explain why the perpetual "Ghibli-ness" trend is harmful, I've compiled Kashi, a educational guide.

I'm not in the mood to play nice to people who don't listen. It isn't my job to hold your hand while you learn that you me and my Japanese kin don't owe you our culture.

To hollowly parrot it without that cultural resonance is disengenuous to his work.

And for you "why not other things" folks, I say to you: this one's mine. That's like asking why someone who stubbed their to doesn't declare war on ALL chairs when it was the one chair they stubbed their toe on.

Those bombs which are foundational to Hayao Miyazaki's work that they are reducing to an asethetic. The longing for pastoral beauty in Miyazaki's work is tinged with heartache for a world that has changed because of violence.

When writing teams made entirely of people who look like and think like the people who bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki and incarcerated all Japanese people in the US create fictionalized versions of a culture they tried to destroy, they are the colonizers plain and simple.

And yes, Studio Ghibli are cartoons, but when what is borrowed isn't just an aesthetic style, but also a false Japanese-ness such as the name (Obojima means absolutely nothing) and the fake writing style that is Kanji-adjacent, it runs much deeper than an art style.

TTRPGs in particular have had a really hard time not taking Japanese culture & giving it to mostly non-Japanese consumers.

Samurai do not exist in any other culture, yet there is an OFFICIAL D&D subclass called Samurai. No Japanese person as far as I can tell ever officially worked on that content.

Despite the overwhelmingly supportive response to my anger at Obojima, it seems some folks still really don't understand.

I'm going to say this as plainly as possible:

You can enjoy Japanese culture, but you cannot make it your own.

Japan gives freely of so much of its culture, but it's a loan. 🧵
