Remembering the Socks That Went Before: My January Leftover Sock Club Socks As part of my year-long goal to knit through my literal bucket of sock yarn scraps, I am taking part in the Leftover Sock Club no-pressure KAL run by @girl.knits. My aim is make one pair of socks fully out of scrap yarn each month, starting no earlier than the first of the month and finishing no later than the last day of the month.

January in Review: A Good Start January was a reasonable month for me this year. I feel like I didn't do that much other than eat a lot of food and chill out, which is (arguably) the point of summer and a relaxing way to spend it. I have no regrets, which seems like a net positive for the month. I also ended up with a net positive for my stashdown plans.

My Crafty Weekend: January Edition There are few things nicer than a long weekend in summer. Long days and warm nights means lots of changes to hang about, chill out and – most importantly – get some knitting done. Therefore, in this Australia Day long weekend (note: I support changing the date and do not celebrate Australia Day), my plan was to smash through my January scrappy socks.

Defying Gravity in the Most Popular Way At the end of last year, I went to see Wicked: For Good in Gold Class. One of my regrets from 2024 was that I didn't see Wicked on the big screen and I was determined not to miss it this time. It was 100 percent the right decision – everyone in the cinema was wearing pink or black, the woman sitting next to me ordered a giant Wicked cocktail that was delivered in a light up hot-air balloon (#cocktailenvy) and it was a very fun experience.

18: Linea Socks: The Sock Project Project Socks 14/26 When I was planning the order in which I was going to knit the patterns from The Sock Project, there was one in particular that I had mixed feelings about: the Linea Socks. My issue with these socks was that while I think they look great with the striking geometric design, I knew that I was going to find knitting the colourwork incredibly tedious.

2026 Hopes and Dreams I love the start of January. The entire year is spread out before me, clean and unblemished. No plans have turned out differently to expectations; no challenges have been left unmet or ambitions unfulfilled. Everything hope can be realised and every dream achieved. However, as much as I love aiming for the sky, as I have gotten older, my dreams have become a bit more realistic.

2025 In Review It feels like an understatement to say that 2025 was a big year. Setting aside the year that was in history and geopolitics (where would I even start?), on a personal note, I did a bunch of stressful and time-consuming home renovations and worked a lot more than is healthy (in 2026 I do not want to do any more work on the weekend!).

Festive Movie Make-a-long 2025 Today is 1 December, which is both a) the first day of summer in Australia (not that you'd know given it is literally as cold as winter today) and b) the first day of the 2025 Festive Movie Make-a-long. I absolutely love the Festive Movie MAL! It started because one of my absolute favourite things to do is watch Christmas movies and knit while doing them, so I thought – why not combine the two?

Rip the Bandaid Off Quickly (Or Not…): #SpookySocktober Week 2 Update I have heard it said that you can tell something about a person's personality based on how they deal with bandaids. Do they rip it off quickly, getting the pain over and done with, or do they gently pull the bandaid off, minimising the pain but taking a much longer time? If you'd asked me yesterday how I would remove a bandaid, I would have said rip it off.

My Crafty Weekend: SpookySocktober Edition In general, I find that my crafty weekends tend to fall into two camps: "super-productive knit an entire sock between Friday and Sunday" or "super fun but effectively just carrying my knitting with me as an ornament while I do other things". There's never anything in the middle - it's either 300 rounds or 30. Therefore, as part of my SpookySocktober celebrations, I decided to track what projects I worked on over the course of the weekend and how much I got done.

A Sock Audit For #SpookySocktober In honour of #SpookySocktober, a fun combinaton of #Spooktober (a month-long celebration of spooky movies perfect for horror movie fans) and #Socktober (a month-long celebration of all things sock knitting, although technically I suppose it could also be enjoyed by people who are just really big fans of socks), I decided to do an audit of all of my socks in progress.

It’s #SpookySocktober time! Today is the last day of September, which is also the last day before my favourite month of the year begins. October is the month where two of my most-loved things in the world - spooky movies and sock knitting – get their moment to shine in the annual events #Spooktober and #Socktober. Spooktober, as the name suggests, is a month-long celebration of all things spooky.

The Sock Project Project: The Journey So Far Happy Tuesday! Today's post was supposed to be another FO post – I am very behind in documenting my FOs ! – but the weather on the weekend did not receive the brief and, instead of being sunny and clear as I requested, was instead windy, cold and miserable, with grey skies, gusty winds and bursts of rain. In short, it was gross.

A tiny scarf as a little treat: The Stay Toasty Scarf I saw a post on Instagram from @froggles.world last week perfectly that summed up my attitude to life: I love a sweet treat. But, not just sweet treats - all types of tiny rewards. I love a nice glass of wine after a long day; an afternoon in the sun with a book after a long week; a cup of coffee in bed with knitting and a podcast on a lazy Sunday (yes, my treats are somewhat sedentary).

#1. Stripes Recipe No. 1: Happy and Scrappy (The Sock Project Project Socks 13/26) In recent months, I hit a bit of a wall in my quest to work through Summer Lee's The Sock Project book. Basically, I had already knit the ones I really wanted to knit or that I had yarn ready for and as soon as I had to start thinking and planning, I just worked on other things instead. What can I say - it's been a pretty big year!

One renovation’s worth of yarn and knitting: A review As anyone who follows me on Instagram will know (and my sincere apologies for all the posting!), this year has been full of renovations and big changes. My house was built in 1974 and in the years before Sam and I bought it had been rented out, so it was both old, with many parts of the property unchanged since being built, while also being a bit neglected and unloved.

#16: Camellia Socks: The Sock Project Project Socks 12/26 Sometimes a pair of socks is knit that is so effortless, so natural to the fingers, that it seems to fly off the needles. It takes so little time, thought and effort to go from cast on to cast off that the socks themselves don't even have a chance to mark their place in your longterm memory. These are one of those pairs of socks.

The Sunday Morning Shawl on a Warm St Kilda Night A few weekends ago, Sam and I were strolling along the St Kilda foreshore just as the sun set. It was startlingly beautiful, like one of those moments you feel like you might have somehow wandered in to a postcard by accident. Groups of friends were sitting quietly to watch the sun set, while couples gently strolled past holding hands and children played in an unusually quiet way in the sand (it was that kind of night).

Severance is top tier sci-fi because it is both an allegory for something we can all relate to — work-life balance, exploitation by corporations — and also a wholly separate reality that brings up its own ethical and moral quandaries, like can innies to to Heaven when their outies go to Hell?

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
