USAID is 0.2% of the US FY2025 budget.
Moral/compassionate considerations of aid completely aside -- and they are huge -- this is far, far, far less expensive than dealing with the downstream effects of failed states and support for terrorism in the absence of this kind of stabilizing support.

My instinct is to make the case that USAID is extremely good, actually. But I feel like it’s more important to say, “What is happening is antagonistic to the foundational document of the nation.”

A tweet by Michael McFaul (@McFaul) that reads: "In 2012, when I was the US ambassador to Russia, Putin shut down USAID inside Russia. Why? Because their work supported free markets, democracy, human rights — ie causes that threatened Putin's dictatorship. Shutting down USAID is exactly what autocrats all over the world want."

Being a federal employee right now feels like being in a horror movie, at the exact moment you realize the call is coming from inside the house.

Federal aid programs are not perfect but they are vital to communities both overseas and here in the United States. This is not the way to enact change.
