But I'm disgusted this this is the world we live in and these are the people who "represent" us.

I wish I could ask these people if $36 a year is enough for an extra day with their Mom, their Grandpa, their Son or Daughter or Wife or Husband. What about an extra year? Or a cure? How much WOULD an extra day or even an extra hour be worth to spend with them? 15/16

I am filled with wonder at what we've achieved for so little from each person.

And filled with sickness and horror that was apparently too steep a price to pay according to our so called "leaders" and our fellow citizens. 14/?

All because since 2005, the average tax payer paid $36 PER YEAR to fund all of this and MORE that might never see the light of day. Too high a price apparently. 13/14

I know I'm yelling into the void, but I can't help but reflect on the actual miracles we've achieved. So many things were a ticking clock, then a battle, then almost an inconvenience. More things could follow the same path but so many people only care what impacts them 12/14

We COULD keep doing that. Fighting step by step, day by day, year by year to claw back more time with those diagnosed. We could alleviate suffering here and worldwide. Because thats what those taxes and grants buy. Time and comfort. 11/14

With that funding. We beat back the reaper step by step over decades all to have the rug yanked out. Because making America great again apparently involves kids, and our loved ones not having access to those extra days and months and years we could be buying for them with research funding 10/14

Researchers can't wait around forever. They'll seek other opportunities, some in other countries. The setback is incalculable.

We bought so much hope, so many years and months of extra time with those we love, and for those we'll never meet. We bought it with our taxes. 9/14

All this and more on TOP of the weird hate for research for things things because they haven't "Cured" everything yet is going to have a massive ripple effect. We started seeing some light and the end of the tunnel, and those in power started penalizing research for not being at the end yet. 8/14

But now?

a 20 something year Diabetes research program ended from funding freezes.

Pediatric cancer research has had cuts and rollbacks.

Schools have hiring freezes and can't pull the best and brightest researchers.

NIH had budget cuts and staff cuts if I recall.

So much hope, and understanding, and preparation, and protection. The treatment! The cures! I've seen it all come to fruition from what was a looming death sentence.

But government funding and LONG research brought us to where we are now. Where HOPE is an option. Not a pipe dream. 6/14

My own grandma had options and had the time to process the oncoming Alzheimers due to better understanding and screening. Family that got to read up on it. What to expect, how to handle it. How it will progress. Meds that were made to slow the progress and buy more time for her AND us. 5/14

I saw the appearance of PrEP become something that was advertised on TV as something you can just DO, instead of a sudden looming death sentence. I saw the AIDS quilts, and the solidarity. I saw friends get a cancer diagnosis that would've just opted for palliative care instead have OPTIONS 4/14

People diagnosed didn't just say their goodbyes, and try to enjoy the time they had left, or get stuck in a home out of sight out of mind. Hell, Diabetes slowly became a manageable inconvenience. I saw the pumps slowly appear, the size of a large beeper. Managed. Multi-dose insulin shots. 3/14
