This is still ongoing. Reposting because Iโ€™m too fatigued to do an update but I donโ€™t want my account to be inactive for so long!

One of the features included in that historic 1939 TV broadcast was a scene from the Broadway play Mambaโ€™s Daughters by DuBose Heyward. Georgette Harvey, Ethel Waters, & Fredi Washington reprised their roles. Here they are at the Empire Theatre in a publicity shot for the play a few months earlier.

Black and white photo of Ethel Waters looking fabulous in menswear in the 1920s. She wearing a suit, including a vest and tie. Her hat is ar a jaunty angle, and she has a flower in her lapel. She is looking into the camera and smiling.

Yesterday was the 86th anniversary of singer and actress #EthelWatersโ€™ variety TV special, โ€œThe Ethel Waters Show.โ€ She was the first Black American to host a TV show! She was closeted by then, but sheโ€™d lived openly as a lesbian in Harlem before gaining wider fame. #PrideMonth ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

Cover of the book WALLS and MIRRORS Mexican Americans, Mexican Immigrants, and the Politics of Ethnicity by DAVID G. GUTIERREZ Cover is red with letters in black and white

here is most of the text from the back cover, not including some of the recommendation quotes:

Covering more than a century of American history, Walls and Mirrors examines the ways that continuous immigration from Mexico transformed-and continues to shape-the political, social, and cultural life of the American Southwest. Taking a fresh approach to one of the most divisive political issues of our time, David Gutiรฉrrez explores the ways that the constant influx of Mexican immigrants influenced Mexican Americans' sense of social and cultural identity and thus shaped their politics and the trajectory of the Mexican American civil rights movement.
Gutiรฉrrez draws on an extensive body of primary and secondary sources to challenge some of the most cherished myths about U.S. immigration and labor policies, the adaptation and incorporation of immigrants into society, and the nature of the ethnic Mexican experience in the Southwest.

"An outstanding contribution to Chicano studies and American history in general. ... With balanced, nuanced writing and superior scholarship, the author has provided a first-rate interpretive framework for understanding the political and cultural dilemma faced by Mexican Americans in American society."
-George Sanchez, University of Michigan

Read this when it came out. One of the best history books Iโ€™ve ever read. Iโ€™d learned maybe 1% in high school, including in Texas history classes. Iโ€™m excited that I found it on Kindle!

David Niven is priceless in #BluebeardsEighthWife! Itโ€™s one of my favorite roles for him. So funny! Gary Cooper, Claudette Colbert, and Edward Everett Horton are all perfect as well, but David Niven steals the scenes heโ€™s in, or at least most of them! #Lubitsch

โ€œI lived in the midst of an abundance of natural life which manifested itself every hour of the day, and from being thus surrounded, thus enclosed within a great whirl of what one may call the life force, I felt that I drew a secret and sustaining energy.โ€

Richard Carlson turned down the lead male role in โ€œBorn Yesterdayโ€ for a supporting role in โ€œTry and Get Me!โ€ but William Holden was one of his best friends, so I donโ€™t think he minded too much how much more successful that film was! (He was first choice for Golden Boy too, another Holden hit!)

๐Ÿคฃ Richard Carlson will be haunted with Hugh Marlowe confusion forever, I fear, unless I manage to get back to work and raise his profile! Then everyone will see his uniqueness and wonder how they ever got them mixed up. Like Jake & Elwood, Iโ€™m on a mission from God! ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜ @richardcarlson.bsky.social
