And in political terms, there is the risk that Starmer winds up looking like he's been forced into a decision rather than chosen it.
29.03.2025 12:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Imo Starmer is simply trying to hold the line, to avoid committing too closely to either the EU or the US, because pivoting in either direction will cause economic harm.
But it cannot last, and it cannot hold. Eventually, he must choose. And there's a risk to delaying:
I sort of understand why Starmer is waiting. We've already seriously damaged our economy with Brexit, and opposing Trump would incur further economic damage - which we can't afford. We placed ourselves in the weakest possible position through Brexit.

Do voters care about manifesto promises? Yes...
But Labour's opponents care more than its supporters
For the latter, feeling positive change is more important than campaign pledges

This is regulatory failure. But if you determine to run a complex regulatory state without acknowledgment, adopting any principles, or sharing any of the load, there's bound to be problems.
Regulation is a huge modern political challenge largely unrecognised.

05.12.2024 22:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In truth, I don't think there's any way any government could be popular right now. We're in too much of a mess, and fixing it is going to take time. So I agree with that general assessment. /30
05.12.2024 22:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Starmer expects this to be a government of two halves: first half unpopular due to trying to rebuild things, a costly and time-consuming project... followed by a second half that's more about - well, forgive the jargon - "delivery." His hope is that the latter period will win people over. /29
05.12.2024 22:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0All in all, I'm quite pleased with this. It feels like a genuine program of government, with specific and measurable targets so they can be held to account. It's a relief to see, after years with no real government. /27

05.12.2024 22:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Brexit sucked up all political oxygen in the room for a long time. Reopen it, and that will happen again. The state we're in is partly because we had government doing nothing but Brexit. /25
