Friday 5 Dec 🇩🇰Denmark, 🇸🇪Sweden and 🇫🇮Finland will move as areas of responsibility from NATO Joint Force Command Brunssum to Joint Force Command Norfolk, where they will join 🇳🇴Norway 🇬🇧UK & 🇮🇸 Iceland. At least this connects the Nordic countries but is not AFNORTH 2.0

The Danish MOD today has announced that the two A330 tanker and transport aircraft will be located at Karup Air Base, which will become a Forward Operating Base for MRTT to enable combat aircraft operations in the North Atlantic and the Arctic.

🇩🇰Denmark is currently in negotiations to acquire a 🇺🇸Patriot system according to the Danish Minister of Defence. If concluded It will be the fifth type of GBAD missile system acquired over the last year.

The acquisition comes from capability targets and was about the ability to protect the most critical military facilities and had nothing to do with the drone sightings - that took place also at Danish and Norwegian offshore instalations several years ago.

Finally, a list of all Danish airmen

Lt Mogens Fensbo served in the 🇩🇰Army Air Corps in 1933 and was a civilian pilot, but joined the 🇫🇮 Air Force in December 1939 and flew Gloster Gladiators from 🇸🇪to 🇫🇮 with Clauson Kaas. Served in Llv 28 flying MS406 and shot down an I-153 over Viipurinlahti 9 March 1940.

Lt Knud von Clauson Kaas participated in the 🇫🇮Civil War in 1918 as an observer in the White Air Force. Joined the 🇩🇰Army Air Corps and became a pilot in 1926. In 1940 age 45 he re-joined the 🇫🇮Air Force flying Gloster Gladiators from 🇸🇪to 🇫🇮. Then to Llv 28 flying MS406 fighters

Somewhat confusing for the Finns, there was also another Gloster Gladiator pilot at LLv 26 with the same surname but spelled with “k”, 🇩🇰Army Lt Carl Kristensen, who joined 🇫🇮 Air Force and was shot down and KIA 29 February 1940 over Ruokolahti.

🇩🇰Army Air Corps 1st Lt Paul Christensen joined 🇫🇮 Air Force 5 February 1940. He saw action w Llv. 26 in Gloster Gladiator and got 1/2 kill 19 Feb and 1 probable before he was shot down over Ruodalahti 29 February and survived badly burned.

🇩🇰 Danish Naval Air Service Lt Jørn Ulrich deserts 1 January 1940 to join the 🇫🇮 Air Force. He flew Gloster Gladiator in LLv. 26 and got three kills before being shot down, but survived wounded. Later during WW2 he served in 🇩🇰 Air Force in Sweden.

Lt Knut Kalmberg joined 🇩🇰 Navy in 1933 and then Naval Air Service in 1937. Trained as a pilot in 1938 he applied the Navy to join the 🇫🇮 forces. Rejected, Knut Kalmberg and his friend Jørn Ulrich👇🏻deserts to fight for Finland and gets one kill before KIA.

Another pilot was Lt Frits Rasmussen here with his kill 8th February 1940 who should have flown glider plane at the 1940 Olympics. Together with Frijs he had planned a trip in a Danish KZ plane from Europe to Singapore. Instead they both volunteered for Finland and paid the ultimate price

One of the pilots was Count Erhard Krag-Juel-Vind-Frijs who on 30 January 1940 became the first Danish fighter pilot to shoot down an enemy plane, when he in a Finnish Airforce Fokkker D.XXI of LLv 24 shot down a Russian Tupolev SB bomber. He was killed after 2 more SB kills 19 February 1940

Coincidentally the 🇩🇰Danish pilots were trained on some of the same airplanes used in the 🇫🇮Finnish Air Force such as e.g. Fokker C.V and Fokker D.XXI. They got into action in 1940 with 8+2 confirmed kills of Russian planes as a result. Four figther pilots were killed in action.

One who actually managed to join the 🇫🇮 army in time was 1st Lt Hans Fenger of the Guard Hussars who served in the 2nd squadron of the 🇫🇮 cavalry regiment Nylands Dragonregemente and was killed in action 17 February at Lake Ladoga.

#OTD 30 November 1939 the Winter War started. 🇩🇰Denmark did not officially support 🇫🇮Finland but about 1,000 🇩🇰volunteers for the army arrived 1940, were trained and equipped, but arrived at the frontline too late. However, some arrived in time incl 15 pilots 🧵👇🏻

The first team of 🇩🇰air defenders has completed the 🇳🇴Norwegian-🇩🇰Danish NASAMS training programme and the first system will be deployed to Denmark before end-2025.

Framework contract with Denmark for logistics vehicles The Danish Armed Forces award Rheinmetall framework contract for up to 1,000 HX and TG trucks. An initial call-off for over 100 trucks was placed. Delivery in 2027.
