WASS Courses The political, legal, and academic calls for governing food and its varied material and cultural components as a commons rather than a commodity are growing in importance and recognition. Food commons are increasingly recognized as essential to a number of interconnected struggles for the right to food, food security, food sovereignty, food justice, and degrowth. At the same time, food commons are often overlooked as relics of a distant past, doomed to enclosure, or too messy to govern. Together we will investigate why this is the case, and identify opportunities for research and action.

Ciska Ulug and I are thrilled to be hosting the summer school for the food commons @w-u-r.bsky.social from June 15-19. We have some amazing lecturers @adamcalo.bsky.social , and inspiring site visits to food commons around the Netherlands wass.crs.wur.nl/courses/deta...

An infographic illustrating indigenous and relational philosophies about sustainability and ways of being. The design features a tree-like structure with curved golden branches, each holding a colored circle representing different cultural concepts. At the base, an arrow transitions from "Relations of Domination" to "Relations of Care," showing transformation in values.

Ten cultural concepts are displayed with unique icons and locations:

Ubuntu (Sub-Saharan Africa) with a turquoise bird

Mino-mnaamodzawin (Anishinaabek, USA)

Satoyama and Satoumi (Japan) with cherry blossoms

Saffu (Oromo, Ethiopia) with a leaf

Kawsak Sacha (Kichwa, Ecuador) with a figure by water

Nanao ñu'u (Mixtec, Mexico)

Birgejupmi (Sápmi, Arctic) with a reindeer

Suma Qamaña (Aymara, Bolivia) with a drum

Sumak Kawsay (Kichwa, South America)

Whakakapa (Aotearoa, New Zealand) with traditional symbols

Below, a legend explains each concept's meaning, focusing on human-nature relationships, respect, and sustainable living practices. The overall theme emphasizes transformation from anthropocentric approaches to ecocentric and pluriversal formations based on reciprocity.

📖 David Korten introduces an inventive economic model, "eco-nomics," essential for fostering a life-centric civilisation. It can replace the current model which only serves the already rich at the cost of the planet and other people.
