Reading the HIDTA report on Oklahoma medical cannabis left me frustrated and deeply concerned about the narratives we allow to shape public policy.

Here’s my effort to call it out.

Very off-base take. It wasn't just shell companies. The exceptions for the filing were extremely limited. As someone who despises orange man and the American oligarchy, I'm happy to not have to disclose my small business information to the government. Many folks would have been hit with major fines.

These type of half truth agenda-reports really don't serve our understanding of the times or help us overcome the varying degrees of tyranny we endure. Also fuck Trump and his oligarch friends who will actually benefit from this as well...

To me it honestly felt like the equivalent of auditing people’s Venmo’s. Like bro, there’s this super obvious way we can get $2.7T more in taxes from corporations alone, why are you looking at me? And if you have a state-legal weed business, you want to disclose that to the Feds..? At this time...?

At the same time, since this is information every publicly traded company already shares with the government, it also didn’t seem like a stretch to require it if you’re a revenue generating business...

Having to work on this directly, the requirement was putting a burden on any American with an LLC… especially if they didn’t know how to navigate it and had pay thousands to hire a law office to handle it (👋).

Like you could have an LLC and a marketing website that never gets visited and still owe the gov $500 a day if you didn’t file this on time and that is certainly bullshit for regular people when we have obvious exploited loopholes by not-regular people.

This requirement has been on again off again due to nationwide injunctions from cases questioning the constitutionality of requiring every mom and pop shop in the country to fill this out or be fined $500 a day—when many business owners had no idea about it.

The BOIR filing requirement wasn’t just for shell companies. It was for virtually every company unless there was an exception—like it being publicly traded, since those already share detailed structure and distribution filings with the SEC...

To be fair, the FDA has operated as a revolving door for pharma companies, is funded by them, and has failed miserably in regulating opioids and handling recalls like Zantac. It shouldn’t be preserved in its current state, but it’s easy to see why a pharma CEO would fight to keep it that way.

I miss the days of my dude showing up on his bike with a backpack full of strains we sampled together. Deli style is the only aspect that’s somewhat preserved and it’s also being killed in several states.
