Hi there internet pals, my first graduate student starts on Monday.

What are things you wish you knew on your first day of graduate school?

What resources did you wish you had access to on day one?

Writing an extension press release about Christmas tree pests. Is a solid chunk of it holiday puns? Yes. Obviously, yes. 😂🪲🎄

Since XKCD’s “Types of Scientific Paper” is making the rounds again, here’s the Entomology one I made a few years ago.

I guess reintroductions are necessary since I have a new job title as of August!

This fall, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to start up the Althoff Lab at the University of Missouri. I’m thrilled to begin building the research team and improve our peri urban entomology infrastructure in MO. 🪲

Pro tip: whenever you photograph two bugs and think "Huh, weird. I wonder what they're doing?" the answer is almost always mating.

A great talk from Jessica Ware
calling us to decolonize our natural history collections and our science & address accessibility to data in the face of climate change and insect declines. It’s an all hands on deck situation. #Nobel59

Will do! I’ve got 9 more months here 🤞🏼 And then we will see where the next adventure takes me. ☺️

I’ve been working in entomology for 9 years. How was I today years old when I learned that wasp-induced galls were used as ink to write the US Constitution? So neat #Nobel59

It is at Gustavus Adolphus College & runs until Wednesday 😭

It’s been a really neat intersection of science and art with Jazz ensembles, dances, and lectures on insect diversity.

I heard we are reintroducing ourselves!

Hi! I’m Emily (she/her/hers) & I study the impacts of climate change on eastern larch beetle, more specifically focusing on their chemical ecology & natural enemies. 🪲🌲💕

It's reassuring to think that, when my time comes, I'll become a feast for cute little bugs. In the meantime, when *their* time comes, I get to pick them up and draw them. The circle of life!
