Hate is built on fear. The cure to fear is knowledge, experience, and empathy. So the backbone of any censorship movement is their ability to convince people that those three things are actually bad.

“banning pornography” is bad on its own but it is imperative that everyone understand that these people consider the very existence of queer people to be pornographic

they consider the most chaste depiction of a queer relationship, or an openly trans person, to be porn and they want it banned

All forms of anti-LGBTQ+ censorship are connected by the explicit goal of isolating queer people from others in society. I'm glad Amy chose to speak up.

I would bet that an intentional re-release of these queer shows, given proper hype and promotion, would see strong returns.

Even hit shows see a huge drop in views in the months after their debuts. That the likes of DBDA, S&B, and KAOS, which received little promotion and were quickly shelved, are still performing at >1/4 the popularity of these shows speaks to the evergreen appeal of queer-inclusive stories.

For comparison, the following shows released in 2024:

Smash hit Baby Reindeer got 4.2m in the first half of 2025. Bodkin got 2.1m. 3 Body Problem, 5.2m. Supacell, 4.5m. The Diplomat S2 got 4.3m. Sweet Tooth, whose 3rd season aired in 2024, saw 4.5m across all 3 seasons, averaging 1.5m per season.

In the first 6 months of 2025, our partner fandoms Warrior Nun and Shadow & Bone saw 3.9m and 2.8m views respectively across their seasons, despite being 2+ years old. Dead Boy Detectives, which aired in 2024, got 1.4m views. KAOS got 3m in this time frame. Across 3 seasons, Heartstopper got 4.5m.

What We Watched the First Half of 2025 - About Netflix Netflix's latest Engagement Report, highlighting what Netflix members watched from January through June 2025, shows that people watched over 95B hours.

We did a quick scan of this list and found some interesting data!

To sum up, queer-inclusive shows tenaciously continue to gather views even as other hit shows decline in viewership. 🧵

Visibility can be powerful, especially for queer people who may not know anyone like themselves or anyone who supports them. This admin knows that.

Erasing any sign that queer people could even exist is definitely a top priority for this regime.

It's important to take time to celebrate the wins, too!

They're attacking education, drag, books, film, and television for a reason. They know how much it matters.

Art is one of the best ways we can connect with others and express our values. Exposure to diverse viewpoints is proven to help us understand and care for people who are different from us.

That's why we're tracking queer-inclusive cancellations specifically. It's a small thing, but art has power.

The cancellation of Colbert could not be a more stark example of the ways our media is restricted by those in power based on their personal agendas.

Democracy cannot thrive with censorship. Our media needs to commit to keeping inclusive voices on air.

Our partnering fandoms continue to show up in Best Of lists a year+ after their cancellations. They are subjects of essays about the importance of diversity and queer storytelling.

Inclusive media matters, but it’s also popular and in-demand.

'Queer Eye,' Netflix's longest-running reality show, to end after Season 10 The Fab Five will no longer continue giving makeovers after this last season.

Though the reason hasn’t been announced, it’s hard not to read the cancellation of Queer Eye as a bad omen in our current political climate. The compassion, positivity, and inclusion the show stands for are sorely needed.

Though these examples illustrate the point, this is more than a matter of one poorly-performing show or another. It’s a consistent, measurable trend of disproportionate cancellations for queer shows.

It’s interesting to note that Baby Reindeer was newly trending at Dead Boy Detectives’s release, and then Bridgerton trended for its new season on Dead Boy Detectives’s 3rd week.

These shows competed on par with many shows that saw renewals. Yet studios seemed unwilling to give them a shot.

The following queer-inclusive shows dropped binge-style and were axed in one or two seasons. All appeared on the Nielsen and Netflix Top 10s for multiple weeks. Here are their Nielsen viewing numbers:

Obliterated: 4m
Kaos: 3.3m
Dead Boy Detectives: 3m
Shadow and Bone S2: 4.6m

Many renewed non-queer shows did not crack the Nielsen Top 10 in their first seasons, but studios took a gamble on them anyway. Examples include The Rig, Julia, Citadel, and Starstruck.

Upload S2 appeared on the Nielsen Top 10 for 1 week, earning 1.9m views and 2 more seasons.

These non-queer series dropped binge-style and earned several seasons. Here are the views (in millions) they earned in their first 2 weeks, according to Nielsen:
