Pixar CCO Pete Docter says they removed gay elements from ‘ELIO’ after finding some parents didn’t want entertainment forcing conversations with their kids they weren’t ready for.

This is a great little bit of investigation! Our data reflects the same - despite comparable cost and viewership, queer shows just don’t get as much of a chance. Boots had the numbers and the buzz. Thank you @bernardosim.com !

Stories like these are why representation is so important. It's wonderful that people are feeling seen and spoken to, and that some folks are feeling inspired to come out because of this show. So glad that it's been renewed!

Statistically not a surprise, but after the buzz this show generated, I gotta say I wasn't betting on a cancellation! #SaveQueerStories
I don't think Netflix should get to eat anything else until it finishes all the prematurely cancelled shows on its plate
It’s almost as though queer shows are popular and in demand by viewers! #SaveQueerStories

Prior to the 2024 election season, media companies predicted increased interest in queer stories (accurate to viewership trends) and greenlit more queer storylines. After, they dropped these characters in a hurry. #SaveQueerStories
If I had to speculate, I’d guess the increase in the number of queer characters, paired with the increased rate of their removal this year, reflects early capitulation to anti-LGBTQ political interests by media companies.
It’s equal parts validating and disappointing to see GLAAD’s data align so closely with our own study’s. We hope our data can provide a comparison between how this trend functions for queer inclusion vs average. These numbers on their own are upsetting. In context, even more so. #SaveQueerStories
The more queer characters a show has, the more likely its cancellation, too. It’s so frustrating to see so many great queer-positive shows disappear despite strong interest from viewers. Thank you for continuing to speak out! #SaveQueerStories
It seems that queer characters are vanishing in groups. Shows with prominent representation often have more than one queer character (some shows, like Our Flag and Heartstopper, have 4 or more). When an inclusive show is canceled, we lose a LOT of representation at once. #SaveQueerStories
41% of LGBTQ+ TV characters not returning in 2026, according to GLAAD's latest Where We Are on TV report newsisout.com/2025/11/41-o...
GLAAD’s “Where We Are On TV” report is out! We’ll be sharing out the data shortly, but the numbers are not looking good.

Way back in the pause before this announcement, I said that if Doctor Who and Heartstopper (two cultural juggernauts) were to be canceled, it would be a very grim sign of things to come.
Both of these shows have now been reshuffled and defunded. This is de facto censorship. #SaveQueerStories

Thank you @bjcolangelo.bsky.social for this article! Queer-inclusive shows like Dead End were already struggling for support, lacking promotion and getting canceled early and more often. We need these narratives and should be supporting them now!
We’ve been researching these attacks on queer-inclusive TV shows for about the last year or so. The data is really something. Queer-inclusive shows were 2x more likely to be canceled or “ended” in 2024, despite performing as well as other shows.
Queer representation is life-saving. This is grim.
1. Led by Elon Musk, the far-right has exploded in a campaign to get Netflix to remove shows with queer and trans characters.
If Netflix capitulates to their demands, an already strained market for LGBTQ+ animators might become even more dire.

Netflix is saying goodbye to the queer edition of The Ultimatum, which encouraged cast members to try out other relationships before committing to their own.
The grim aspect of this retroactive outrage is that the fascists already won on this front. These people are getting mad about shows from the '10s and early '20s because there's vanishingly few now. They've already been purged. But fascism can never "win", it always looks backward for more enemies.
They’re talking about Lisa Kudrow’s show The Comeback which is getting a third season a decade later—this could be us, never give up!
