2018 Kīlauea earthquake may have stalled fault's slow slip for decades The magnitude 6.9 earthquake that took place in 2018 on the south flank of Kīlauea on the Island of Hawaiʻi may have stalled episodes of periodic slow slip along a major fault underlying the volcano, according to a new study by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 2018 magnitude 6.9 Kīlauea earthquake appears to have halted periodic slow slip events on a major fault, potentially delaying their recurrence for several decades.

New satellite view of Tibet’s tectonic clash A study on tectonic plates that converge on the Tibetan Plateau has shown that Earth’s fault lines are far weaker and the continents are less rigid than scientists previously thought. This finding is ...

My former postdoc supervisory team (Tim and Andy) and their @uk-comet.bsky.social mates did it again. Casually, rewriting geodynamics using carefully processed space geodetic data to role of weak faults in deformation of Tibetan Plateau.

A team of scientists from the Spanish Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), led by the Dr Mariano Barbacid, has achieved the complete and permanent disappearance of pancreatic cancer in experimental (mice) models.

This discovery could make a difference in the fight against this disease. 👏

Photo from USGS

Kilauea erupted again yesterday in a fierce display. In only the 2nd time in 40 years, park officials closed the area due to the intensity.

Fountains were officially recorded at 500 m high, grapefruit size tephra were being ejected, and tephra fall was measured up to 20 miles away.

It’s baaaaaack… The Norris Uplift Anomaly In July 2025, an area on the north rim of Yellowstone caldera began to uplift slightly. This area also experienced uplift during 1996–2004.

Did you know that two Network of the Americas (NOTA) GPS stations are measuring uplift on the northwest side of Yellowstone caldera?

Two weeks ago, a Spanish geoscience advocate group went to the Spanish parliament to present a dramatic survey on the lack of investment in geoscience. A number that stood out was the current numbers of geology degrees students are 1/3 with respect to year 2000.

2/3 less talent to drive the future

Current, US hostile science environment might be a major factor but we are on a downward trend… we are not training as many Earth Scientists as one or two decades ago. Less students enrolled at Unis, means less graduates, means smaller community and less influence (policy and funding decision).

It took a lot of effort but finally we are in La Palma!! Exposition about the deployment carried out by our 240 pax @csic.es Canary Islands team (largest Spanish research institution) that got together during the 2021 Tajogaite eruption doing research by sea, land and air. 🌋💪

We think there was a small eruption there in July/August (at least a small plume) and some ongoing activity there since (including continued uplift). I suspect all linked to recent activity along dyke from Erta Ale (See COMET reports on July/August activity at comet.nerc.ac.uk/event-respon...).

The 2025 Santorini unrest unveiled: Rebounding magmatic dike intrusion with triggered seismicity Magmatic intrusion in Earth’s crust can lead to hazardous volcanic eruptions, but the physical processes involved remain largely hidden from direct observation. We used machine learning–derived seismi...

New! We study the disruptive 2025 earthquake unrest near #Santorini using machine-learning derived seismicity as virtual stress meters at depth. We show the unrest was due to a magma dike intrusion, imaging in detail a complex, rebounding process of dike propagation.

photographic view featuring the tower of the building of the Institute of Geosciences in Jena towards west. The institute is located on a Pleistocene strath terrace of the Saale river, c. 50 m above the city centre (feturing some skyscrapers in the middle of the photo). The forested plateau in the background of the photo is formed by mesas exposing Middle Triassic strata ('Muschelkalk'). Jena is a thriving university town offering very high living standards and a cool place to be ;-)

Spontaneous Transient Summit Uplift at Taftan Volcano (Makran Subduction Arc) Imaged Using an InSAR Common‐Mode Filtering Method Evidence for a 10-month Taftan summit uplift episode due to a 490–630 m depth pressure source ending with increase in gas emissions Improved uplift characterization applying a novel satellite int...

🚨 New paper Alert! 🌋🛰️

We report the first signs of unrest at #Taftan Volcano (Makran Arc). Using InSAR and Common-Mode Filtering method, we detected a spontaneous 10-month summit uplift—without any external trigger—suggesting possible internal magmatic processes.
