I posted this a while back so I'm not sure, though I've noticed dust seems to be building up faster next to windows than in the past. But that could be related to something more local.
As hard as the last 5 years have been - and as much as the job market sucks - I'd do it again.
Is this a normal amount of particulate matter for rainwater in an urban area? Any researchers need/want an LA rainwater sample? #losangelesfires #rainwater
I'm NOT saying we're doomed. But I AM saying we need to remember we don't know the answers to some very important questions. We need play it safe, not be sorry. We can't avert our eyes & pretend problems will go away if we don't look at them. We can't race to rebuild and end up here all over again.
We also have to recognize how the trauma adults are experiencing will simultaneously hurt parents' abilities to be present for their kids AND place demands on our healthcare & welfare systems that we don't have adequate infrastructure for.
And again, this is ASIDE from the effects of trauma from evacuation and loss. We KNOW that trauma has long-term physical consequences on the body, and I wouldn't be surprised to see rates of chronic conditions and disorders come to a head in 5-10 years.
We're about to see unprecedented levels of toxic chemicals from burned cars and houses - those electric car batteries *are* going to put runoff into our soil and water table. It's impossible to prevent, and when rebuilding happens there's gonna be variation in how much care folks put into cleanup.
Particulate matter in the air - we don't have enough data on what's in the air, how much there is, or what it'll do to people. We aren't even sure how high the risk is. And we definitely don't know how that kind of airborne particulate matter will affect a child's brain or respiratory development.
There's a "but think of the children!" moment in CA right now that I'm surprised more folks aren't talking about. Aside from the trauma of losing their homes and schools burnt down, we do NOT know enough about the consequences of fires at this scale in urban areas. #losangelesfires #childdevelopment
Oh whoa, thanks for including me in the starter pack! π₯Ήπ«Άπ»
I study empathy & differentiating between performative kindness vs genuine altruism, and I'm interested in improving college classroom climate. I did my master's thesis on child "misbehavior" & self-regulation. I survived 2 masters' & a PhD with ADHD, your ADHD episodes were so meaningful for me! <3
ππ»ββοΈ Defended in May! Hang in there! And I'd love to network with fellow education researchers. π Maybe plan some conference meetups?
