I imagine when the time came for Jasper to be wrongly hanged for the murder of his nephew, foreshadowed when he paused
to hang “that great black scarf” in a noose on his arm, Jasper would be singing up the gallows just like Dickens wrote in chapter 14: “And so ‘he’ goes up the postern stair.”
☘️Ode to John Jasper (the Limerick)☘️
There lives a choirmaster named John J.
Who will be climbing the gallows today
But the mace was omitted
Should he not be acquitted?
For the execution, Rosa cries: “Stay!”
An early St. Patty’s Day limerick for you, Christine:
“There lives a fair lassie named Christine
A Dickens book in her hand can be seen
Although the book is unfinished
Her resolve can’t be diminished
Can the villain within be the Dean?”
An early St. Patty’s Day limerick for you, Jenny:
“There lives a fair lassie named Jenny
Flash fiction and poems, she has many
While others are neglectful
Jenny’s always respectful
Kindness and goodness, she has a-plenty.”
Sometimes just an American accent on a Dickens character can ruin it for me. But Depp is a great actor, so I’m rooting for him to pull it off.
Kind of like a Victorian version of ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’. 🙂
I always get nervous when actors say they’re going to try a new angle with a beloved character. If I didn’t care for the remake of Willy Wonka, I’m not sure how I will react with Scrooge (I like when film is kept close to text). Hopefully, Johnny Depp will pull it off.

Sounds like fun! Eddie has become quite a noir-ish character himself.
I hope you’re feeling better, Em. ❤️🩹
(Now that she’s a licensed psychologist, she can figure out what’s wrong with Dad.) 😆
(Of course, we’re also proud of her dog Cinnie too.) 🙂
So proud of our daughter, Dr. Stephanie Stillman, on her new position in Coral Gables, FL.

The Artist does have that moment of sound during the dream scene, so can it truly be considered a silent movie? (I ponder that as I bite into a Twizzler.) 🙂
One of my fave Hitch films.
🤣
How does it end? 😆
I love Hitch, but I don’t believe I’ve ever sat through a screening of Vertigo without falling asleep.
Next time you’re at a library, check to see what version of Edwin Drood they have: the capitalized “IS” from Dickens’s manuscript: “What IS the spike that intervenes, and who has set it up?” or the one Dickens changed back to a lowercase “is.” (Funny how changing the size of two letters tells all.)
Dickens changed the “IS” in “What IS the spike that intervenes, and who has set it up?” back to lower case letters because he was putting too much emphasis on the inanimate object—“the spike.” Just as he omits the mace in chap 9 to avoid tipping readers off too early, he omits the capitalization.
Love this song!
Indeed. Dilly-dallying leads to dawdling which leads to shilly-shallying. 🙂
An early St. Patricks limerick for you, Miss Melanie… 🙂
“There lives a fair lassie name Melonie
Not drinking with her would be a felony
But each time I go for a sip
Her cat drinks my nip
“Just look at the pic!” she’s been tellin’ me.”
Cheers, Melanie!
I once witnessed a grackle steal a child’s bag of potato chips from one picnic table, fly to another, peck the bag open, then eat them.
(Smart, opportunistic birds those grackles.)
Of course, Dickens is also referring to the demonic carvings on the Cathedral stalls, which he personifies as “the Dean and Chapter”, writing that “the fantastic carvings on the under brackets of the stall seats” are “as malignant as the Evil One”.
(See chapters 3, 14, and his final chapter.)
In The Mystery of Edwin Drood, note when Dickens writes of Cloisterham Cathedral: “its hoarser and less distinct rooks in the stalls far beneath”, he is speaking of the Dean’s “intoned”, “feeble”, “cracked”, “monotonous”, “dying” voice that awakens “muttered thunder”.
(See chapters 1, 3, and 9.)
Hilarious!
I like your cover pic, Agnatha—Violet Newstead from 9 to 5. I saw that movie with my mom during my freshman year of high school. (And don’t worry, I’m not a “sexist egotistical lying hypocritical bigot”
lol.
