Happy 67th Birthday to Willie McGee, who the Red Sox signed as a Free Agent in June of 1995. He spent 18 yrs in the Majors, collecting 2,254 Hits, 1010 Runs, 352 Stolen Bases and 1 MVP. In his 1 season with the Sox he hit .285, with 2 HR’s and a .715 OPS.

Happy 46th Birthday to Coco Crisp, who the Red Sox acquired in a 7 player trade with Cleveland in January 2006. He played 3 season with the Sox, hitting .271, with 21 HR’s, 70 Stolen Bases and a .720 OPS. In November 2008 he was traded to the Royals for Reliever Ramón Ramírez.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Bob Veale, who passed away at the age of 89 this past January. The Pirates released Veale in 1972 after 11 years with the team and the Sox signed him in September. He played in parts of 3 seasons with the Sox and was 4-4, with a 3.45 ERA and 15 Saves.

Happy 54th birthday to the great Pedro Martinez. Pedro enjoyed an 18 year HOF career and it all started with the Dodgers in 1992. In all, he won 3 CY Awards, earned 5 ERA titles, was an 8-time AS, and won a WS ring with the Red Sox in 2004. ¡Feliz cumpleaños, Pedro!

On this day in 1889, “Smoky Joe” Wood was born in Kansas City, MO. Though a broken thumb caused an early end to his pitching career, in the early 1910s, there was nobody better than him on the mound. Here’s my painting of him with Boston in 1909, based on the photography of Carl Horner. He’s shown wearing the Red Sox away grays, complete with a laced-up front and high collar.
