Neuronal co-activation peaks when SWRs couple to cortical slow-oscillation–spindle complexes, highlighting the cortex’s active role in shaping hippocampo-cortical communication during memory consolidation.

4/5
SWRs selectively co-reactivate experience-related concept neurons in the hippocampus and downstream remote areas.
3/5
Cortical slow oscillations and sleep spindles actively shape conditions for optimal hippocampal information transfer, structuring medial temporal lobe firing dynamics during sleep.
2/5
We show that hippocampal SWRs drive a directed hippocampal-to-cortical information flow at the single-neuron level, with latencies scaling with distance from the hippocampus.
How are memories consolidated during sleep?
Excited to share another preprint: hippocampal SWRs route memory content to the cortex via interregional co-reactivation of concept cells, optimized by slow-oscillation–spindle coupling. With the great @tschreiner.bsky.social @humansingleneuron.bsky.social
How does the brain replay memories during sleep?
Excited to share our new preprint, the outcome of an extensive effort led by Johannes Niediek, showing that reactivation of human concept neurons reflects memory content rather than event sequence.
Episodic memory consolidation by reactivation of human concept neurons during sleep reflects contents, not sequence of events https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.01.10.698827v1
I'm happy to share my debut as first-author with the recent publication of our article in #JNeurosci:

Big thanks again to @tschreiner.bsky.social and the whole team who made this possible! 🧠🌬️
Excited to present our recent work on how sequential coupling of sleep oscillations enables concept-neuron reactivation and supports information flow across the human hippocampal–cortical circuit. #SFN2025 Board NN12 Nov 19 8 AM–12 PM #sleep #memory #HumanSingleNeuron

🚨 New preprint alert!
Excited to share our latest work on alpha/beta activity, eye movements, and memory.
Across 4 experiments combining scalp EEG/iEEG with eye tracking, we show that alpha/beta activity directly reflects eye movements, and only indirectly relates to memory.
👇 Highlights (1/7):
Born from a collaboration with @danlikesbrains.bsky.social ’s team, this project shows how your breathing shapes brain excitability across the entire wake–sleep cycle. Huge shoutout to everyone involved — go check it out! 💥

Excited to share our new study on how respiration modulates neural dynamics during successful memory retrieval—led by @estebanbt.bsky.social, alongside the exceptional team of @fabian31415.bsky.social, @maritpetzka.bsky.social, @tobiasstaudigl.bsky.social, and @bstaresina.bsky.social. 👇
Very excited to share the first preprint of my PhD thesis!
Together with @tschreiner.bsky.social, we investigated how respiration coordinates signature neural expressions of successful remembering during memory retrieval. 🫁🧠

In our recent @cp-trendsneuro.bsky.social forum article www.cell.com/trends/neuro..., we highlight respiration's potential role in coordinating sleep oscillations and memory consolidation. With the fabulous @tschreiner.bsky.social and @estebanbt.bsky.social
Ready for an exciting day at #ScienceIsWonderful! Together with @estebanbt.bsky.social and Benjamin, we’ll show kids how to become sleep scientists and explore how breathing influences brain activity. Can’t wait to share the wonders of science!
📢 New preprint from the lab:
We are very excited to report the discovery of an oscillation in the Central Thalamus using rare direct recordings of human thalamic electrophysiology.
The novel oscillation is tightly coupled to specific, natural states of consciousness.🧵
