Oh I’m so revolted by the idea of watchmen sequels, prequels and spin-offs, I have no interest in watching or reading any of them. I heard the hbo series is okay, and gets the spirit of it right, but I can go my entire life without watching it.

I’m admittedly not the biggest fan of Gibbons’ drawing style(matter of personal preference), but Watchmen is perfectly constructed, and Gibbons’ attention to detail is genuinely staggering. It’s status as the best(or one of) graphic novel ever is well earned.

Oh in my experience, people who are the most adamant to call themselves comic fans are overly pedantic idiots and dullards.

Watchmen is a story that only the comic medium can tell. Even in the most capable hands with the most faithful approach, a film adaptation cannot begin to do what the comic did. The panels, the written excerpts at the end of each issue, the 12 issue format, how each panel is a moment in time…etc.

Ugh- those written segments are ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to understanding the overall theming.

Unequivocally presents Rorschach as a hero and Ozymandias as the villain, while they’re presented as dark mirrors of each other in the comics, massively simplifying the politics and paranoia of the Cold War, Glorification of violence, themes of nostalgia, lacking important visual motifs…etc.

Helps too that Miller’s politics are problematic to say the least, so Snyder’s vision of 300 aligns with Miller’s xenophobia.

Oh yeah, the movie version makes every senseless act of violence perpetrated by Rorschach as badass and warranted, and it did incalculable damage to the perception of the character

Rorschach is the ultimate projecting hypocrite- demonizes people he seems as jobless leeching filth, as he breaks into people’s homes, eats their food, brutalizes people whether they’re innocent or not…etc.

I really don’t think watchmen is bitter about superheroes, it just successfully did the deconstruction thing before anyone else did- Moore and Gibbons clearly have an affinity for superheroes, but use them to explore the human condition.

It’s not mere copy paste, it’s a cut and rearrange job, stripping images of their meaning and intended sequence.

To be specific, Zack Snyder venerates the aesthetic of violence, glorifies it, think it’s cool, rather than an ugly representation of the human condition.

Calling the task of adapting watchmen a Herculean effort is a massive understatement- it’s downright impossible.

It also feels like an overtly fascist interpretation of a work that is explicitly anti-fascist. Which, it’s Zack Snyder, so that’s hardly surprising.

I always knew Snyder’s adaptation of Watchmen badly missed the point of the comic, but rereading the comic for the first time since I was in high school, it’s kind of incredible how BADLY Snyder doesn’t understand the material, imagery or themes
