I don't really want to go back to grad school but I do want to have an excuse to write a coherent paper on this, instead of doing what I am doing right now, which is reading the L&O wiki's list of recurring defense attorneys and ranting about how the text unfairly undermined them.

In retrospect, expecting FBI to have a reasonable take on anxiety medications or ptsd was a clear mistake, and I absolutely know better than this.

Off the top of my head, between L&O and SVU, at least 3 ADAs have left to become defense attorneys, another was fired for thinking the DA's office should have basic moral standards, and a fifth quit to become part of a vigilante advocacy group because the legal system failed to protect victims.

I just want to write a long essay about how the L&O franchise is constantly fighting between its desire to be very specific propaganda and the way that its character work undercuts all that propaganda and they have to rely on increasingly thin excuses to not admit it.

but what's fascinating about this to me is how many lawyer characters leave L&O because they decided they wanted to work as defense attorneys and/or felt they couldn't stay at a DA's office that makes life less safe for the people who deserve to be protected.

I need you to understand how much time in the past few years I have spent thinking about how the L&O franchise thinks defense attorneys are the enemy, and how much this ruins their ability to tell a good story.

Both of last night's Laws and/or Orders were pretty solid and I don't know what to do with this.

I understand why basically no one watched Celebrity Apprentice but it's the single most useful political/cultural reference for the past decade.

Oh, for sure! Cirie is incredible at these games and seeing her on EVERYTHING is like watching an Olympic athlete whose event is strategy. I just get don't understand why the show refuses to recognize that Survivor DOES play to her strengths. Even if, 21 years ago, she got scared by a leaf.

#Survivor50 (Yes, I saw the giant snake on today's Survivor episode. But they also had shots of NATURE. That's how you know it's the artsy reality show.)

#Survivor50 This also ties back to the way CBS doesn't know how to promote Big Brother and Survivor as complementary strategy games requiring different skill sets, rather than the one that wins awards and the cheap parking lot show with many competitions whose props look remarkably phallic.

#Survivor50 That's basically the ideal storyline for them to have on season 50, and it's even CBS so they could use clips if they wanted to. But it goes against their narrative that Cirie is remarkable because she's ill-suited to Survivor but succeeds anyway.

#Survivor50 I know how much this show loves the "Cirie got up off the couch and did something outside her wheelhouse" narrative but it's ridiculous to ignore that, while she was great at Big Brother, this is the game she's a legend at, and this is the game she LIKES.
