If you’re a woman, you’re probably intimately familiar with this predicament. You are too much simply by being a woman in the world with a brain in your skull and a mouth in your face, and you can make the former twist and form the latter to say all sorts of words that make people squirm, even if you don’t mean to. Even if all you intend is to speak your truth or tell a joke or—swelling full with any of life’s grave injustices—rage at some horror, you will remind those people you are a woman who is taking up space, maybe even entitled to take up space. And by people, I’m talking about men. Sure, there’s always some woman primed to kneecap you for wearing a skirt that’s too short or too tight, for wanting and reaching for more and more and more. But let’s be real. They’re only foot soldiers, collaborators who hope that by selling out the female faction, they’ll be treated better by those with true power. Nah. Men will shit on these quislings just the same as they will you, given half a chance, once their usefulness expires. A woman’s usefulness—as an ally, a foe, a muse or fantasy or servant—always expires, because there’s forever some new way that a woman can be not right. The goalposts shift swiftly and without much notice, rarely with any true rationality. One day you are immaculate, the perfect creature, spotless. You cannot be improved upon; change is superfluous, maybe a little greedy to ask for. Freeze, don’t move, put your hands in the air. Stay right as you are. But you do move, and you do change, because you are not a fucking statue. You are human, you are an animal, even before you are a woman. Change is knit into our existence from the moment one cell cleaves into two, into four, and on and on until hey look here you are, in all your messy, bloody glory, growing and shifting because that is what you are meant to do. Men know this. They know that change is power. Gregory knew this, which is why he told me I was perfect just the way I was. I changed anyway.
