New! On my Substack: War Memorial Monday. This summer I'll be sharing war memorials from around the world that I've visited along with stories of the places, people and connections to the war they represent. Today it's francophone communities in Manitoba: open.substack.com/pub/akimling...

Battlefield tour "Canada at Ypres" - The Long, Long Trail Introduction See all the main sites associated with the Canadian forces fighting in the Ypres salient and pass through the battlefield areas […]

I'd almost forgotten I had ever created this. Only came to mind today when someone mentioned it elsewhere. And this is why I give my full support to Canada. #WW1 #FWW #Canada #Ypres www.longlongtrail.co.uk/battlefields...

My question is - then how come the Mexican food sucks here? I’ll believe this when I can find a decent burrito.

Here's a fact most Americans don't know:
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is the largest purchaser of wine by dollar value in the world.
The LCBO has shut the flow of all American beer, wine, spirits.
We will drink "Freedom wines" from our allies and beer from our communities.

I don’t have a lot of positive thoughts or things to say right now, but here is my cat and she has no idea what a tariff is.

Fighter jets scrambled from Alaska and Canada as Russian warplanes spotted in the Arctic, NORAD says Several hours later, NORAD said it also scrambled two F-16 fighter jets from Alaska to Greenland.

We literally fight and defend ourselves and each other side by side, together.

We manufacture and grow and produce things, together.

This tariff war is complete insanity and self-destructive.

More Gettysburg today, a hike in a less traveled area of the battlefield. Walking the ground like this connects the books and stories to the physical world, and I always leave with a renewed vigor to learn more. Having awesome people to share it with makes it all the better. Happy New Year!

Love that the chief war bore went to see my local war memorial!

City and county workers pass by the names of Ramsey County war dead every day - Memorial Hall in Saint Paul City Hall / Ramsey County Courthouse was dedicated to them, the names are inscribed in marble in this lovely art deco building.

What are the mental gymnastics you play with yourself to be productive?

When I need to start writing a paper, I have to make the document title something super non-threatening. Right now one my term paper drafts is titled "Blank Page."

Today’s full length feature is up. In 1983 a biographer of George V called him a coward for not offering asylum to the Tsar.

Find out how it wasn’t his decision to make, why politically it would have been a terrible idea, and what a devastated King did do for his tragic Russian relatives…

My original post had nothing to do with any of that. You said he wasn’t influenced by the book, I pointed out his brother recalls it otherwise. That’s all I have to say about it.

Robert Kennedy writes in his memoir Thirteen Days:

"Barbara Tuchman's Guns of August had made a great impression on the President. 'I am not going to follow a course of action which will allow anyone to write a similar book about this time...' he said to me that Saturday night, October 26."

In my younger years I was really into the Cold War. Because of that I bought my own copy of Guns at age 17, and remember bringing with me on the bus for a school mission trip. There is no exact moment my #WWI obsession started, but that was certainly one step along the way…

For the past few weeks I’ve been knee-deep in the Cold War for my courses, including a project on the Cuban Missile Crisis. So many interesting aspects to it but my favorite thing continues to be how President Kennedy was reading the recently published Guns of August and it influenced his decisions.
