We show that non-traditional families, especially open and age-gap couples, face substantial prejudice. Even LGB couples encounter bias, highlighting persistent inequalities in societies often seen as tolerant.

Marginal means interaction between sexuality of the couple and type of relationship.

Marginal means interaction between sexuality of the couple and age difference between partners.

Furthermore, our interactions showed a compounded effect between sexuality, relationship type and age difference. Both open and age-gap homosexual couples, especially those consisting of two men, were significantly less preferred than heterosexual couples with the same characteristics.

General marginal means model showing the effects of each characteristic of the experiment in the preference of respondents for a couple to adopt.

Our general model of marginal means revealed multiple layers of sexual prejudice within the Catalan society. Respondents showed significantly less preference for non-traditional relationships, including same-sex couples, and particularly open and age-gap relationships.

Example table of the experiment. It includes characteristics such as names of partners (cue for sexual orientation), type of relationship (open/closed), age of partners, education level of partners, values and reason to adopt.

We conducted a conjoint experiment as part of the 2022 Sociopolitical Survey of the Centre d'Estudis d'Opinió in Catalonia. In this experiment, we asked 4,298 respondents to select one of two couples seeking to adopt a child, after evaluating different characteristics that were fully randomised.

Abstract of the paper, it reads: How widespread is sexual liberalism in tolerant societies? Theoretical and descriptive evidence suggests an overall liberalization in societal views on topics such as women’s rights and homosexuality. Yet, relying on sexual norms theory, this study unveils persistent sexual prejudice. We differentiate between “normalized” sexual issues, like same-gender marriage, which have gained mainstream acceptance, and “nonnormalized” issues, such as nontraditional sexual practices and relationships, which remain stigmatized. Through a conjoint experiment in Catalonia, Spain, we investigate public attitudes toward adoptive parents with varying sexual orientations, relationship types, and age differences, confirming that discriminatory preferences are prevalent in contexts with low social desirability. By highlighting the continued prejudice against both normative and nonnormative sexual issues, this research contributes to our understanding of the dynamics of sexual attitudes and the challenges facing LGBTQ+ politics and rights.

All to appease the right, who hate them anyway - shame on them.

This is a terrible move that will hurt the trans community as well as the Labour Party in the long term.
