The People Eater from Mad Max: Fury Road

He really saw the People Eater in "Mad Max" and decided that was the look to go for?

Formic acid originally comes from ants 🐜 I'm pretty sure it's what gives them that smell.

Those kinds of books, as well as condensed books, *can* be genuinely helpful for adults who are learning to read. They're adapted by humans for a specific purpose. Adult learners shouldn't be relegated to the kids' section, you know?

This is something different, though. Thoughtless slop.

There is...a lot of shame that prevents or delays people from seeking literacy help, and equating illiteracy with stupidity or ignorance is the cause of that shame.

Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong There's an idea about how children learn to read that's held sway in schools for more than a generation β€” even though it was proven wrong by cognitive scientists decades ago. Teaching methods based on...

This is a completely different problem caused by schools abandoning teaching kids what letters mean. Kids have not been taught how to sound out words.

yeah that's usually what it is if a kid can't sound out words. They were literally never taught how. Oftentimes they'll guess what a word is by trying other words that start with the same letter - "activate" or "application" instead of "agitate". They were taught to do so instead of phonics πŸ˜•

I think you need to spend some time as an adult literacy tutor and gather some real data.

Illiteracy does not equal stupidity. A slight majority of Americans struggle with literacy, that doesn't mean they're stupid.

That is almost certainly a result of the "whole language" or "balanced literacy" methods that a couple generations of kids were taught instead of phonics. It has recently been discredited, but kids who were taught it in the past have not gotten remedial instruction. They need help.

No. Every day that democratic congressional representatives don't file articles of impeachment, they are enabling him. Every time they vote to confirm a nominee, they are enabling him. Every time they do business as usual, they are enabling him.

And we are enabling them by keeping them in office.

There is a whole cookbook's worth of breakfast options out there, why act like a shit waffle and a shit pancake are the only choices?

Thanks for admitting how similar the two are, though - start with the same base mix, add a little oil to one, cook in slightly different environments.

His "bold, courageous" decision to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples is now something he thinks he shouldn't have done because it wasn't "culturally normal".

That is not "standing for" gay rights, to say nothing of his backtracking on trans rights.
