Supersized stick insect discovered in high-altitude trees in Australia The 40cm-long insect, named Acrophylla alta, weighs slightly less than a golf ball and may be the heaviest insect in Australia

Like the old-growth coastal redwoods that host whole other ecosystems in their spires, these extraordinary Australian stick insects reveal not only the richness and mystery of mature forest canopies but how vital their protection is for countless forms of life.

American musical satirist Tom Lehrer dies at 97, US media report Lehrer, a Harvard-trained mathematician, wrote darkly humorous songs, often with political connotations.

On Saturday, the great Tom Lehrer died at the age of 97. Mathematician, singer, songwriter, satirist and a great character.

All of his songs are in the public domain, so if you're into tributes, now is a good time to do one.

In NE Greenland today, I watched a male Sanderling give his all to impress a female-- song and calls, slowmotion dive and nest scraping.

She was not impressed and calmly kept foraging.

I need someone to explain to me, like I’m a 10yo, what’s up with the trains in Germany & Switzerland? Why the same trip took 4hrs in January, is taking 7hrs in spring? Why are simply cancelled?

They’re not even cheap!

Why have we cracked air travel but not trains?

Science’s β€˜Gollum effect’: PhDs bear brunt of territorial behaviour Survey respondents at all career stages report colleagues engaging in territorial and possessive behaviours β€” but early-career researchers are most often affected.

New study in #Nature reveals the 'Gollum effect': nearly half of surveyed scientists report territorial behaviorsβ€”data hoarding, gatekeepingβ€”mostly during #PhD. Early-career researchers bear the brunt; 1 in 5 left academia as a result.
