Writing about civics and government; making things; dad & husband. Working with my brother on a documentary about American teachers. Yes, I did write all those Crashcourse history videos for John Green.

this last point is so important. People have a tendency to think that the government cheats you when more often than not government prevents you from being cheated (by corporations, stores, landlords, employers etc.)

As I understand it, per pupil expenditure in TX averages about $15K. What makes anyone think that they will be able to educate students with $10K, or that a $50K private school will happily accept a student who only can pay 1/5 of that?

I didnโ€™t watch the sotu, but did Presidementia mention the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence at all?

Why advocates of privatizing public education donโ€™t look at what actual private schools cost is a mystery to me.

You could add a helot doing an eye roll and the jerking off motion, maybe.

Such a waste of time and money. Even if they find and arrest someone, no NYC grand jury will bring an indictment against someone who throws snowballs at a cop. Have we learned nothing from sandwich guy?

and it's far more important to understand your state's employment law, particularly in terms of at-will employment, than it is to have a deep, philosophical understanding of time, place, and manner restrictions or fighting words.

Take 1st Amendment jurisprudence. It would be nice to understand the reasoning behind Brandenburg, or Tinker, or Miller, but from my experience as a teacher and an American, most people don't understand that your boss can fire you for what you say (unless your boss is the government),

Possibly, but citizens have limited capacity for understanding how government works, and if there's a choice between SCOTUS arcana and what a zoning ordinance does, or how a school is paid for, or what a state's voting rules are (and it is a real choice) then I'll go for the latter.

Does anyone but me remember when deleting testimony that might show the president to be a law breaker was scandalous enough that the president resigned? Congratulations Donny, you're worse than Nixon.

Sure, but the best way to keep the justices humble is to point out that most of their decisions don't have a great deal of influence on our daily lives unless we are large corporations or government employees.

24.02.2026 12:52 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I disagree. Focus on court decisions reinforces the notion that governing=what the federal government does. The vast majority of our lives are governed by state and local laws and ordinances. We focus on court decisions because itโ€™s easy to do so.

I've never used the phrase, but I've heard it on podcasts with British hosts. I suspect Tom Holland has used it on occasion. It seems rather plummy to me, but my understanding of British class often lets me down.

How about this: The Hunger Games, but the contestants are the richest person in each state (50 contestants) and only the survivor gets to keep their fortune. As each one dies, their fortune goes directly to their state. First games are held at Zorro Ranch.

I think separation of church and state is a good thing. And I don't think that religion is what makes candidates divisive, as a general rule. I'm not a Christian, but I'm pretty sure that someone can be one without being a Christian Nationalist.
