A map showing the English Empire as it stood just prior to the 1685 colonisation of Bengkulu in South-Western Indonesia by the East India Company. There is a day/night terminator line, showing the empire was still able to be in total darkness at this point.

A map showing the English Empire as it stood just after the 1685 colonisation of Bengkulu in South-Western Indonesia by the East India Company. There is a day/night terminator line, showing that the empire spanned sufficiently broadly east/west such that there was no date/time (until the 2025 surrender of the Chagos Islands) where the sun was not shining upon at least one part of the Empire.

I've been doing some historical data analysis, and I think the first time the 'sun never set' over the british empire was in 1685 with the colonisation of bengkulu by the East India Company (when it was still called the English Empire). Didn't factor in eclipses though... #history #maps
