England currently has a very clear group of five parties with MPs and significant support. There really is no excuse for Laura Kunessberg to choose to interview the other four during their conferences, but ignore @zackpolanski.bsky.social #GPconf

Yes, I actually think it’s sort of the opposite: being actually democratic means you can have differences out in the open, and that somewhat reduces the bitching and nastiness.

Green membership in fact 50% bigger than Lib Dems
Lib Dem membership is much lower than widely reported
Revealed: Green Party membership in fact 50% higher than Lib Dems - previous Lib Dem figure included non-paying ‘supporters’: open.substack.com/pub/abolishw... #gpconf

When @lbc.co.uk invited me on to talk about @greenparty.org.uk/ @zackpolanski.bsky.social, I didn’t intend to talk about how capitalism is driving both the climate crisis and the cost of living crisis. But that is what I did 🤷

Combined membership is certainly possible - I’m one. But of the 7,800 Scottish Greens, I’m confident it’s no more than a couple of hundred people or so.

Unanimous support for trans healthcare shows that the party has (for now) moved on from its terf wars, which were a source of huge friction in recent years. It did this not by sacrificing trans people, but by getting tough on transphobic bullies.

'This means that the number of Greens across Great Britain - around 91,000 - is around 50% more than the membership of the Lib Dems'.

(I should be clear that the error came neither from the Lib Dems - who reported their number perfectly accurately; nor the Greens, who should be able to rely on a BBC report, but from the BBC, who appear to have misread the Lib Dem’s accounts)

The real power brokers
We won’t get real climate action while big polluters are overseeing government departments.
How can the British government departments take the action we need on climate breakdown when their boards are littered with the people causing the problem: theecologist.org/2025/oct/03/... - me for @theecologist.org

REVEALED: The big polluter and arms industry bosses overseeing government departments
Two in three Whitehall department non-executive directors have corporate backgrounds - and only one is a trade unionist - analysis released ahead of Labour conference reveals.
One feature of the British state’s undemocracy is that Whitehall departments have boards of directors, made up of ministers, civil servants and non-executive directors. I went through the CVs of all of the latter, and found extraordinary corporate capture: open.substack.com/pub/abolishw...
