at first i was like idk if i can draw hr fanart cuz drawing any fanart of live action stuff is just not my forte, but if i can find a way to stylize or simplify Shane and Ilya enough that I don't just think of them as the actors then (Ilya bathroom voice) maybe... MAYBE... I will draw hr fanart

like the dialogue or lack thereof is like unreliable narrators but then the song choices put their real feelings on blast

Also "No Feedback" playing when Shane's looking around for Ilya but he's not there and he gets bummed about it. Just to name like two, but the show consistently does this so if u hear the lyrics at key moments, it tells you stuff that is otherwise unsaid in the dialogue.

Like during their first back and forth texting, when Ilya is coming onto Shane strong while Shane is ignoring him, the song "mangetout" has the lyric "just take the fucking hint". Not saying whole songs fit the scene but certain lyrics are pointedly placed.

I really love Heated Rivalry's use of music to add to the storytelling. The boys don't say much and you need to pay attention to pick up what they're trying to say with their expressions. The music gives you a lot that the boys don't say.

And after his confrontation with Alexei there's those few seconds on him showing him shaking it out as well. I just think it's such a good detail for his character

I think it is such a fascinating point so I'm surprised so many people just cut past it. After one of his calls with his dad, the music is so affecting and he throws his hands down to shake off the stress so he can return to Shane "normal", and the way the music cuts from that is so GOOD

I've watched many many HR reaction videos and idk if it's just that it gets cut in the YT version and it is mentioned more in people's uncut paywalled versions but so far only like 1 person barely pointed out how Ilya shakes off his stress. I think about it all the time!!!

HW: I kind of take issue with people writing off sex on TV. I’ll see those comments. I’ll see the people kind of going, “Oh, is there really a need to show this?” And I’ve always had a problem with that, because, of course, there are the times when it’s low-hanging fruit, and people are just using it to sell something and just smack it on there. But since cinema was created, there have been beautiful, usually European filmmakers, a lot of Asian filmmakers, that have a very sex-forward view. Like this show, I also think of Normal People. The sex was a part of driving the story forward. It wasn’t gratuitous. It was real, it was beautiful, sometimes ugly, but always really story-focused. I feel like our show does the same thing.

So I think as long as filmmakers and artists that come on board something all have a clear view of the writing of the action of these scenes, there’s always room for it. I think there’s a lot more road we have to pave, because it’s not like we’ve told every story that involves sex. There’s going to be a lot more. And as long as everyone’s mature enough and smart enough to tell that story properly and make everyone on set feel safe, I think it must still be in shows and movies going forward.

I love the entire interview and you should really read all of it but i am going to put this answer from Hudson about sex in TV here cuz it needs to be said again and again. I think Jacob also said in another interview that ppl don't like sex on TV cuz they're seeing bad sex on TV.
