We are being given more transportation options A recent letter claims that the City of Victoria is “forcing” people to ride bikes. This just shows how skewed our perceptions have become. Municipalities have prioritized and catered almost exclusively to automobiles for the past century. Over the past 10-15 years, they have started trying to develop more balanced transportation systems, though still only a small fraction of road space and the transportation budget is being allocated to other modes of travel. This is interpreted by some as “the war on cars.” The letter writer states that his elderly mother is not able to ride a bike. That may be true, but the goal is not to have 100% of the population riding bikes; it’s to provide more transportation options for everyone, whether that means walking, cycling, transit, or driving. A far larger share of the population can’t easily travel by car, whether because they are too young or too old to drive, or because they don’t have access to a personal vehicle. In the past, those people have been left with limited mobility in a transportation system that assumes everyone is going to drive.
