I design infrastructure for pedestrians and people on bikes. Also love transit. Posts are my personal opinions and do not reflect the position of my employer

This is the south end of a project to widen and urbanize Carp Road between Hazeldean Road and Highway 417. Therefore north of this intersection the road will be rebuilt with the latest standard in cycling facilities, but east, south, and west of the intersection will need to transition to existing.

No City staff would have claimed a design they are proposing in unsafe, let alone a local street contraflow design that is a well accepted facility type. It's the equivalent of an architect claiming the building they are designing is unsafe. Your statement is dangerously close to professional libel.

Agreed. There is still a lot I like about Montreal Road, but continuous raised side street crossings would have really improved the experience.

I'm relatively sure it will get planted in a similar fashion to the existing portion of Robert Grant south of Abbott, which often has double rows of trees per side.

Most regions of Canada do not have natural population growth - so that is probably not a contributor.

I love some of the features on display here: wide crossings, bollards on the corner islands, and near side bicycle signals (even if they are still placed a touch too high)

When the City of Ottawa developed our protected intersection guide and cycle track standards, we looked to the City of Nanaimo for inspiration. Nanaimo was (and is) a North American leader for active transportation design standards and it is starting to pay off in a big way! youtu.be/pN5muvQ0-tM?...

In recent summers, Seoul has been rolling out shade canopies across major streets, plazas and transit hubs to help residents cope with extreme heat. These fabric structuresโ€”sometimes shaped like trees or wingsโ€”offer pedestrians relief in a city where heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense.

The basic route planning previously shared is that it goes through Toronto-Peterborough-Perth-Smiths Falls-Ottawa to avoid track sharing with CN. Kingston wouldn't be on the route.

However, the latest guidance on what signage is required vs. what is more situational can be found in Section 4.11 & Table 8 of this Ontario Traffic Council guide: otc.org/wp-content/u.... I helped review/edit the guide and 4.11 is one of my favourite sections.

The placement of signs at signalized intersections is the responsibility of the City traffic signal designers, so I won't comment on our practice.

13.09.2025 21:54 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Similarly Envirocentre was visiting a bunch of new (or rebuilt) intersections this season for observations and education. The intersections were chosen based on how new they were, not how intuitive they were.

13.09.2025 20:33 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Truth be told, the amount of signage is mostly just adherence to external or internal standards, it has nothing to do with the intuitiveness of the intersection.

13.09.2025 20:28 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I often see this statement on Bluesky, "because an intersection has a lot of signage that must be because the City is over-compensating for an unintuitive design".

After years of advocacy, a plan Gladstone/Gilmour bike lane is finally out for public consultation! Fill out the survey and let the city know what you think. The goal was to implement a path for safe cycling, while also ensuring that the 14 bus is not slowed down.

Not involved with this project, but I assume the buses would be slowed down if the project needed to remove critical turn lanes to add the cycling facilities.

The east of the avenue Christophe-Christophe reconstruction between Jean-Talon and Jarry is complete. It features wide, raised cycle tracks and advanced stormwater management features that will make the street more โ€œspongyโ€.

The directional TWSIs alone are not dependable for those who use guide dogs, so the mountable curb is used as well. I have some ideas to improve the standard potentially, but needs testing with those in the accessibility community.

09.08.2025 04:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Interesting note: the south side between major intersections was originally just supposed to be pin curbs. No grass boulevards and no raised crossings. It was only through scrounging around for money that we barely managed to connect the major intersections with permanent construction.

08.08.2025 22:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Sure, ya, if someone rained money (and adopted maintenance in some cases), then improved landscaping may be possible.

I hear you, but it wasn't a full renewal (didn't involve any underground utility replacement needs in order to get asset management funding). Moving the pipes ($$$$) would have needed to be paid for from the cycling budget, which would have taken away from many other important projects.

08.08.2025 21:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yes, that is what I am referring to. It's an accessibility feature/standard to guide people who are blind from the MUP to the sidewalk. That said, standards are meant to be improved, and I am hearing the feedback that it can be difficult for people on bikes to navigate in slippery conditions.
