David Inshaw’s fantastically detailed rendering of an equally fantastically smart allotment is a joy to behold. This painting has been known to provoke feelings of allotment envy. Painted in the long, hot summer of 1987.

The three ages of British nerd are 'that Top of the Pops set dressing has been in Doctor Who', 'on a rewatch, The Tomorrow People is shite', and 'oh God, I'm older than Richard Vernon was when he played Slartibartfast, which tbf is younger than you'd think'.

Timothy Taylor's Landlord eh? That could turn into a long evening. If so, I hope it's a splendid one.

“The world’s divided into two lots of people: people who ride to hunt, and people who hunt to ride.”
The world is indeed divided into two lots of people. The first lot believe the world can be divided into two lots of people, then there's everyone else.

Post image An image of the infinitely worry children's book Struwwelpeter.

At the age of 6 I was awarded a prize for 'progress', a rather nebulous catch all reserved for those of us who could generally remain awake and upright. Some of you will recognise the prize. What can I say? Well done. We've made it this far and probably still have thumbs.

The Kingswear Daymark - an octagonal 80ft tall stone tower on the Devon coast. Post image Post image

The Kingswear Daymark - built in the 1860s as a navigation aid to shipping. The designer - Charles Seale Hayne - seemed to have a thing for the number 8 - it's octagonal, and 80 foot tall.

The woods around here are remarkable. Not an easy place to leave behind I imagine.

Also brought Klimt's ‘Malcesine on Lake Garda’ to mind.

A view across the river Dart at night - a full moon rises above Kingswear

A little closer to the water.

Thanks for the recommendation Nicola - I shall track down a copy. Got Michael Powell's autobiography for Christmas - looking forward to reading that too.

A lane with wooden fence. In the foreground, a large tyre encircles a concrete bollard. In the background, an abandoned shopping trolley with rubbish: Pringles tube and tied up baggy of dog poo (presumably)

Quintessential urban lane aesthetic

The moors near Taunton yesterday held more water than I'd seen in years, Anna.

Beetles and bees today. And the dunnocks were singing away like stand-in skylarks.
