Almost every single HBCU is under a bomb threat

There have been almost no announcements about civil discourse and safety regarding the students there.

Multiple Virginia college campuses locked down, classes canceled Virginia State University and Hampton University, both Historically Black Colleges or Universities, locked down due to campus threats.

UPDATE - it is not just VSU. It appears Virginia HBCU's are being threatened systematically.

Virginia State University is currently on a full campus lockdown over a threat of violence to the university.

I've done all the things - closed the lab and confirmed everyone is safe. But this is horrible. Luckily I'm home sick today but many are sheltered in place. This feels awful.

Wow SPSS added this awful highlighting feature to EVERY ANALYSIS OUTPUT with no way to turn it off. Why would anyone want or need this feature? So obnoxious.

Every time I have to peek back at SPSS for something I am so glad R exists and is free lol.

In summary, there is no way to predict the long-term harms that can be caused by forcefully removing groups of people from communities based on simple demographics and ideology. For Richmond youth, they still live with elevated risk due to discrimination that was intended for their grandparents.

I think this paper is especially timely given the abrupt removal of long-time community members happening across the US. In the 1930s the HOLCs policies weren't intended to have these downstream effects, but it's creators didn't care either and they are still linked with such severe disadvantage.

Despite these major differences - our results mirror those from other studies.

2) our sample was unique in that is was mostly female - this was the case because we opted to maintain cases of sexual violence. These events are often separated in studies but in our case presenting to the ED with violence-related injuries on the body was our inclusion criteria.

Similar findings have been reported in other cities. Our paper marks an important replication for several reasons.

1) this effect of RLing on violence had never been tested in RVA. If racism is involved in this effect then it should (& did) replicate in the former center of US chattel slavery.

We found that a staggering 85.71% of violence hot spots in Richmond were regions that previously belonged to redlined communities (i.e., those labeled as C or D by the HOLC). These findings were generally consistent across study years with some small variation.

We residualized the violence counts against population density of each region in order to control for pop. in our Moran's I analysis which allowed us to identify violence hot spots. We then retrofitted the digitized redlining maps from UofR's online repository to our modernized maps for exploration.

We utilized data from the VCU Health hospital in Richmond, VA specifically on violence-related injuries in adolescents between the years of 2022 and 2023. We utilized GIS tools in R to conduct a geospatial analysis based on these data using the city's official shapefile.

At no point did it tell me to be careful or warn me I shouldn't be doing this if I didn't already know how to hook it up with the manual in my hand, which is the only right answer.

I gave chatGPT the wiring schematic for a range hood I was installing - I wanted to see what kind of advice it would give about wiring it. I gave it a very specific scenario about what I was seeing and asked it how to proceed.

The instructions it gave me would have almost definitely caused a fire.
