This is a good lesson for journalists: Use plain language to state true things clearly.

• If there's one thing controversial CBS News editor Bari Weiss has earned praise for it's her hands-on booking of big names for the network. But there's one booking she seems to have blown up: New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, who had been in talks to appear for an interview on CBS News Sunday Morning with Robert Costa.
Mamdani's team, I'm told, has long been averse to appearing on CBS given the coverage his campaign got from Weiss's The Free Press, but her recent social media post reacting with a fire emoji to an Iranian activist's diatribe against Mamdani was the "nail in the coffin" for him appearing on the network, two sources with knowledge told me. "Bari and her people have a clear axe to grind for him," said one former CBS producer. (CBS News did not respond to a request for comment.) And the network's turn away from news and toward opinion is proving to be a broader problem. "It's not just Zohran," the source said. "It's really

lol. CBS had been trying to get Zohran Mamdani for an interview, but Bari Weiss' deranged tweeting caused him to turn it down

The Trump admin dismissed AI risk assessment, evaluation and bias testing as burdensome overreach. Now their own DoD is requesting exactly that to ensure systems actually work--in war. Basic, foundational safety and effectiveness testing is essential for *ALL* AI use, as are our rights to privacy.

It's all there. All of the bullshit claims about emergencies and national security threats. The goal all along was to give Trump the power to deploy the military domestically to suppress dissent and crush MAGA's enemies.

These are dangerous people. They're now in the highest levels of government.

Learning today that the Post is setting subscription-renewal rates algorithmically (washingtonian.com/2026/03/12/t...) motivated me to direct some of the money we're saving from our own cancelled subscription to @51st.news, a newsroom that actually prioritizes local coverage.

I think people reacting to this with OMG WW3!?! are missing how hysterically, inadequately small 2,500 Marines is compared to what's necessary to do literally anything to Iran, even something very dumb.

Montclair High Students Walk Out to Protest ICE Montclair High School students marched to protest ICE activity, voicing their concerns for immigrant rights in New Jersey.

To the point that @prisonculture.bsky.social was making yesterday: high school students continue to walk out EVERYWHERE, but there is no mainstream media coverage of it.

The US brags about sinking Iran’s warships when what really matters are these small fast boats. They are Iran’s competitive advantage on water

While the US fights a conventional war, Iran is fighting an asymmetrical one that uses the US’s conventional power against itself.

Support for the govt was absolutely at its lowest levels ever b4 this war. Still unlikely to constitute a maj now. But the longer this continues, the larger that contingency will become especially if theres a land invasion and attempt to seize Iranian territory. That is game over for the US/Israel

Israel’s dedication to annihilating the people of the Levant knows no parallel. They want to swallow Lebanon and empty it of its people to populate it with their own and end any possible hope for a sovereign and independent Lebanon. And sadly the Lebanese govt is largely on board with this project

“Iran’s leaders entered this war with the goal of ensuring it will be the last one. Either it breaks them or radically changes the country’s circumstances. They are betting on surviving long enough and squeezing the global economy hard enough to realise that goal.”

Michael Edison Hayden — Strange People on the Hill: How Extremism Tore Apart a Small American Town - with Jared Holt — at Conn Ave A gripping story that reveals what happened to a small American town when an influential white nationalist group relocated its headquarters there, illustrating how radical changes in American politics impact our psyches and divide our communities When the white nationalist group VDARE used dark money to purchase a historic castle overlooking Berkeley Springs in West Virginia, America’s “cold civil war” spilled into this scenic tourist town. From behind the imposing stone walls of their castle, VDARE’s Peter and Lydia Brimelow spread propaganda focused on the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, sowing discord in the once-peaceful town below. In an attempt to restore civility, a group of neighbors banded together to oppose VDARE’s presence in Berkeley Springs. Strange People on the Hill urgently demonstrates how extreme reactionary ideology and the national politics that embody it disrupt the lives of everyday Americans while highlighting the intimate relationship between violent, racist radicalism and what now passes for mainstream conservatism. Through extensive on-the-ground reporting, renowned researcher and investigative reporter Michael Edison Hayden shows how the politicized culture wars manifest in deeply personal dramas and conflicts in a moving narrative about how the people of Berkeley Springs are bravely standing up against hate and division and forging a community built on inclusivity, respect, and neighborliness.

If you'll be in the DC area on April 11, be sure to mark your calendars and come hear @michaelehayden.bsky.social and I talk about Mike's new book: "Strange People on the Hill." (Out April 7)

We'll have some little gifts for pod listeners who come hang!
