The River Dynamics Laboratory at Simon Fraser University, in collaboration with WaterSHED lab at the University of Calgary (https://ucalgary.ca/labs/waterSHED), seeks a PhD student to work on sediment supply in mountain drainage basins in the Rocky Mountains. The candidate would develop and validate a morphodynamic model of changes in river channels caused by coarse sediment delivery by landslides. The candidate will join a large group of students and postdocs at Simon Fraser University and the University of Calgary with expertise in river geomorphology and natural hazards.
The PhD candidate will:
1) Build a one-dimensional numerical model to predict channel evolution that is based on the Parker family of morphodynamic models
2) Collect topographic and sediment texture information to parametrize model in the field
3) Validate the model using channel profiles and newly acquired lidar
4) Experiment with the model to explore sediment removal and augmentation strategies
Minimum qualifications include:
1) A Masters degree in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Physical Geography
2) Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
3) Experience with hydraulic and/or morphodynamic modelling.

Job advertisement for a tenure-tract assistant professor faculty position in Environmental Science and Geology. candidates with expertise in hydrology (including surface water hydrology, hydrogeology, and ecohydrology), climate science, urban waters, or related fields, but welcome qualified applicants in other fields of environmental and earth science. A successful candidate will have a PhD in their field, effective communication and teaching skills, and a record of scholarship that indicates that they will establish an internationally recognized, externally funded research program. They will also be positioned to complement existing departmental and program strengths in environmental geochemistry, aquatic and terrestrial ecology, population ecology, tectonics, and geophysics and contribute to our vibrant undergraduate and masters programs. Preference is placed on candidates doing quantitative and/or interdisciplinary research.
Please submit your application materials at jobs.wayne.edu (job posting number req2374).The application materials include: i) a cover letter; ii) complete curriculum vitae; iii) a statement about teaching describing prior experience, teaching philosophy and the list of courses the candidate want to teach or develop; iv) a statement of research describing past scholarly contributions and future research directions; v) a statement describing experience and vision for enhancing participation of underrepresented groups in environmental science and geology; and vi) names and contact information for at least 3 references. The review of applications will begin on December 15, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. For additional information contact the Search Committee Chair, Scott Burdick, by email at sburdick@wayne.edu.
