Today's #BlackHistoryMonth spotlight goes out to Courtney Smith (she/her), the Director of Voter Engagement at Forward Montana!

Courtney envisions a world "in which Black people can have an outsized voice to move our country towards an equitable and sustainable future."

Direct democracy is one of the most powerful tools we have to fight back against tyranny.

We are not going to let self-interested lawmakers and big-moneyed special interest groups take that away.

Only a few weeks into legislative sessions, BISC is already tracking 50 bills aiming to attack the #BallotInitiative process.

Legislators are using a web of technicalities to undermine direct democracy, & many of them have become more brazen about their end goal: to take away the people's power.

We won’t look the other way.

We will continue to hold them to account until the will of the people becomes the law of the land.

However, conservative politicians are now trying to undermine our voices by blocking the implementation of these measures.

First, they came for our rights in the Supreme Court — and now they’re coming for our votes.

This week, we lost legendary reproductive rights advocate Cecile Richards, who understood that abortion is essential healthcare and Roe was the floor, not the ceiling.

In 2024, voters in 7 states took power into their own hands — using the power of #DirectDemocracy to protect & expand abortion.

In November, Prop. 6 was on the ballot in California.

If passed, it would have added an amendment to California's constitution barring slavery in any form and it would have repealed a current provision allowing involuntary servitude as a punishment for crime.

Incarcerated people make up nearly one-third of California’s wildfire response teams.

Right now, they are putting their lives on the line for under $6 a day.

It doesn't have to be this way.
