To be clear, this is a new product that Novavax is trying to introduce to the market with a study of a different product from 2021. New products require new clinical studies. Under this administration, we are prioritizing the Gold Standard of Science--not what saves pharma companies "tens of millions of dollars." Headline: "FDA Asks Vaccine Maker to Complete New Clinical Trial for Delayed Covid-19 shot"

It’s stunning to me that the New York Times did not put the story on the bloodbath at the NIH, CDC, and FDA on its front page this morning.

This one absolutely breaks my heart. The NIH post baccalaureate IRTA program lets our youngest and most creative minds come together to understand the potential impact of a career dedicated to scientific discovery. It sets trainees on a future not only of science but of *service*.

The NIH overhead cut doesn't just hurt universities.

It's deadly to the US economy.

The US is a world leader in tech due to the ecosystem that NIH and NSF propel. It drives innovation for tech transfer, creates a highly-skilled sci/tech workforce, and fosters academic/industry crossfertilization.

The Treasury Department right now. People are turning out against Musk and DOGE staging a takeover of the Treasury’s payment system. This crowd is big. The whole block is packed. “Lock him up,” everyone yells.

The best thing that scientists can do right this moment is organize with each other. Form networks, do coordinated communications: comms to the public, comms to media outlets, comms to Congress. That's the most urgent need.

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.”

University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

Mentoring is so hard right now. I can’t reassure my grad students that our research grants will be secure or that their student visas will keep them safe or that they’ll have all the same civil rights when they graduate as they did when they started.

Canada did this in 2017 with their Canada 150 Chairs. The U.S. lost some phenomenal scientists to that recruitment effort.
