He showed how population-level data could reveal patterns in disease, inequality, and environment: not just during outbreaks, but all the time
Farr is honoured as a foundational figure @lshtm.bsky.social and his name is among the 26 carved on the exterior of the School’s Keppel Street building
While John Snow is often credited with founding modern epidemiology, William Farr built the machinery that allowed it to scale.
Working at the General Register Office in London, Farr developed one of the world’s first systems for routine mortality surveillance, standardised causes of death.

If you have time during the conference, visit the pump replica and the nearby John Snow pub at Broadwick Street, Soho.
This was a radical idea back then as germ theory was not proven.
His cholera map convinced the local authorities to remove the pump handle. Without access to contaminated water, the outbreak subsided, supporting his hypothesis.
In a severe cholera outbreak in London, Snow mapped the cases & linked disease incidence to a single water pump on Broad Street. Snow challenged the dominant miasma (bad air) theory, compared exposed/unexposed populations, + used place-based data to argue that cholera was transmitted through water
