The Racing Kitwing is a mount built on top of the landta ray- this concept shows a fuzzy blue mammalian creature strapped into a davinci-esque flying contraption that snaps to the same bones used to animate the rays 'wings'

The Bramble Skimmer is built on the same ray shape- this mount is made entirely of moss-covered stone pieces that hover independently of eachother. Carved patterns in the stone tie the design to the world's mythos- "the astral bramble" and the players' journey from the stars.

When thinking "how can we skin the mount designs to get the maximum amount of variety without obvious reuse?", It's harder to hide your tracks on something with a more unique movement signature. I took that as a challenge when working up these two variants on the Landta.

An array of color concepts for the Lanta Ray- a hovering ray mount with mushroom spots, a gilled underside, and a tipped branchlike tail.

The mushroom inspired Landta Ray was another one of the 5 mount movement archetypes picked for launch! The wyvern was bipedal & dinosauresque. The twicetail covered most cat/wolf quadrupeds, then there's this fellow! Mantas have been my favorite animal for ages, I was psyched we had room for one!

I wracked my brain to come up with novel ways to move- diving in and out of the ground (like a- dare I say- streetshark ), surfing a slithering sidewinder, kite surfing behind a big ball of fuzz- this sheet of concepts shows a Stoneshark, Sunwinder, and Moonbat that represent those mount mobility types respectively.

I loved that the team- animators, riggers, modelers and designers were all excited to push things as far as we could- these mounts didn't quite make the cut, but we learned so much from trying to figure out "why not?"

A sheet of full-color mount concepts. The Shell Jelly is a classic JRPG slime, with a snail shell on its back, and a saddle affixed to it. The Trundepillar is a rainbow colored inchworm, with little booties on each of its many feet and a cute little checkered scarf. The Shrubram is a leafy bush with curling horns made of branches, a flower for a tail, and a little sheeplike face. The Mosswoggle is basically a frog, just sorta a...more special frog? some pollywog/axolotl notes and pushed proportions. The Highland Lupogriff is a wingless hypogriff with a unicorn protrustion at the top of its beak! And that's the whole gang

Speaking of mounts like the Plains Wyvern! Project Dragon had a whole range of mounts planned (and sculpted) (and animated)
We jammed on novel mount ideas as a team, pitching different movement styles & personalities. The Trundlepillar was a big hit and I'm still proud of him 😭

Think of an egg, okay now that egg is a robot, but that robot is made of terracotta clay. And full of holes like a flute. And he's got accordions for arms and chimes on its back. Got all that? that's Oca!

One of the most important designs of the whole project for me was Oca! Our ocarina golem. I kept telling my teammates “we need weirdos! Weird little guys!” But everyone really understood once I came in Monday with Oca to pitch. He’s a living clay ocarina with accordion arms 🎵

An Elder Pinoceros named Autumn- her twig horn has grown into a full tree trunk with branches of it's own. Among the branches, little creature enclosures are hung, her back is saddled with birdhouses. Gosh, whoever designed this must have been having fun...you should probably follow him

One of the first creature ideas I pitched at the start of Dragon was the Pinoceros, and it stuck! Erika & I went on a walk in the woods talking about the project, our early memories of playing pretend in the forest, favorite rpgs, and by the time we got back the pino was hatched!
