CFP: A Time of Monsters
The monster has been here all along. It is a historical constant that manifests in wildly different ways across time, place, and culture. Whatever form it takes, the monster claws at categories; it un...
If you are a supporter and reader of @contingent-mag.bsky.social one of the biggest things you can do to help us at the moment is get this CFP to the NTT folks in your life. The fracturing of social media has made it very difficult to get the word out esp. to adjuncts and VAPs.

the number one thing institutions and funders can do for community archives is just give them money, whether they have a 501(c)3 or not. give them money to do the work they need to do. #SAA25

there is a small contingent of us at VU libraries that are planning some discussions on AI's environmental impact and ethics, since it very much feels like that is being ignored at our institution.

This is my personal feeling, too. But also told from my higher ups that we *have* to engage with it, which suuucks.

Overall, using AI improved the questions the students asked of historical documents and helped them analyze the documents more critically #SAA25

Students learned that AI needs really specific inquiries and also needs a framework like RICHRAB in which to analyze the historical documents
Once the AI started producing errors, students began correcting the AI tool and some stopped using it #SAA25

Gavin Newsom is a genuinely bad person and any admiration you have for him needs to be directed toward actually good people like JB Pritzker or Andy Beshear.

AI Is a Mass-Delusion Event
Three years in, one of AIβs enduring impacts is to make people feel like theyβre losing it.
Hello. I wrote a nice long essay about AI and this very strange moment where we're constantly told we're living in the dawn of a strange new future but the only thing that's actually clear is that everyone feels pretty unmoored and uncertain. I hope you'll read it

A screenshot of a ChatGPT conversation reading: "can you write something about robert e. lee in the voice of washington post staff writer gillian brockell?"
"Certainly! Here's an excerpt written in the voice of Gillian Brockell, a staff writer at The Washington Post, reflecting on Robert E. Lee's legacy:
The Complicated Legacy of Robert E. Lee: A Figure Divided by History
By Gillian Brockell
When Robert E. Lee's name is invoked, it is often as a symbol of Southern pride military brilliance, or a tragic, doomed cause. But history has a way of shifting its lens, and in recent years, the image of Lee -- the Confederate general, the hero of lost causes -- has become increasingly more fraught. The man who stood as the face of a rebellion that tore the nation apart now stands at the center of an ongoing reckoning over the Confederacy's legacy, and our struggle to reconcile memory with reality."
When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles.
Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.
